HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Texans host the New York Giants on Sunday in Houston, and both teams will be missing key pieces, though the Texans could get one big name back.
Wide receiver Tank Dell is listed as questionable but is expected to make his first appearance since a Dec. 21, 2024, injury in which he tore several ligaments in the left knee. He took part in practice all week.
Houston has a long list of its own absences. Running back David Montgomery is out with a groin injury, safety Reed Blankenship is sidelined by a concussion and a hand injury, safety Jalen Pitre has a shoulder injury and tackle Blake Fisher is out with a thumb problem. With Blankenship out, expect M.J. Stewart to step in at strong safety, pairing with Calen Bullock. Pitre and Montgomery are missing a second straight game and could return after the Week 9 bye.
The Giants are even thinner on defense. Inside linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who signed a three-year, $36 million deal in March and leads the team with 50 tackles, is out with a shoulder injury that is expected to end his season. Cornerback Greg Newsome is out with a concussion from last week’s game against New Orleans.
Safety Jevon Holland, who had played every one of the defense’s 380 snaps through six games and leads the Giants with three interceptions, was downgraded to out on Saturday while still in concussion protocol. Tight end Theo Johnson was also ruled out with a neck injury and did not travel.
New York, coming off a 34-27 loss to the Saints, will hand J.J. McCarthy his first start at quarterback for the team. The Giants are already without quarterback Jaxson Dart and edge rusher Brian Burns for the long term.
