The legendary British rock band, The Who, has announced their North American farewell tour titled ‘The Song Is Over North American Farewell Tour’, starting August 16, 2023. The tour will feature 16 shows, culminating in Las Vegas on September 28, 2023. Notably, there will be no Texas performances, leaving Houston fans to travel over 1,000 miles for the nearest concert. The band members reflect on their long career as they prepare for this emotional final tour, which emphasizes their lasting legacy in American music.
Las Vegas, Nevada – The legendary British rock band, The Who, has officially announced its North American farewell tour, titled The Song Is Over North American Farewell Tour. The tour is set to commence on August 16, 2023, in Sunrise, Florida, and will conclude with a performance on September 28, 2023, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Notably, the band will not include any performances in Texas, leaving fans in Houston and surrounding areas without an opportunity to see the iconic group. The announcement comes on the heels of their last Houston-area performance in 2022, where the lead vocalist indicated that it might be their final appearance in the city. Houston audiences have enjoyed over a dozen concerts by The Who since they first performed in the city in 1975.
The tour will consist of 16 shows across various cities, with accompanying stops at iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York and the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Fans in Houston will need to travel over 1,000 miles to attend the nearest concert, which will be hosted in Fort Lauderdale, Chicago, or Las Vegas.
As the band members prepare for their farewell tour, both lead vocalist Roger Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend have acknowledged their age as a significant factor in their decision to retire from touring. By the time the tour begins, both musicians will be 80 years old or older. Reflecting on this milestone, Townshend described the end of touring as a “poignant time” for the band, recognizing their long-standing relationship with American audiences, which spans more than 60 years.
The decision to embark on this farewell tour follows a challenging period for the group, which included a moment of uncertainty regarding drummer Zak Starkey’s role within the band. Additionally, their previous tour schedule faced delays when Daltrey lost his voice during a performance in 2019 at the Toyota Center.
Tickets for The Song Is Over tour will go on sale on May 16, with presales available beginning May 13 for Citi cardholders and fan club members.
Despite already having declared farewell tours in the past—most notably in 1982 and one labeled a “long goodbye” in 2015—this announcement has been emphasized as the definitive conclusion to their touring career. Daltrey described the farewell as bittersweet, acknowledging the emotional difficulty of closing this significant chapter of their lives.
