Texas Job Market Growth
Texas is experiencing significant economic growth, with a forecasted job market boom leading into 2029. Major cities like Houston, Dallas, and Austin are set to receive a substantial share of new employment opportunities. Along with large metropolitan growth, smaller regions are also witnessing job increases, contributing to a robust labor force. Noteworthy sectors like trade and hospitality are driving this trend, positioning Texas as a prime location for job seekers seeking dynamic career opportunities.
In an exciting turn of events, Texas is riding a wave of economic growth that is set to outshine national trends through the year 2029. While it’s true that the job market can be a bit wavy, this is a bright signal for many Texans looking for work. In fact, a substantial portion of new jobs is expected to manifest in larger metropolitan areas, making cities like Houston, Dallas, and Austin bustling hubs for employment opportunities!
When diving into the numbers, it’s anticipated that around 46% of the new jobs will pop up in the bustling greater Houston and Dallas areas. That’s right! For folks in these vibrant cities, the future looks bright with plenty of opportunities on the horizon. Looking specifically at the Dallas-Plano-Irving economy, it’s projected to gain a whopping 322,400 wage and salary jobs over the next five years. Meanwhile, the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land MSA is forecast to add 355,900 new jobs, making these areas true gold mines for job seekers.
If you’re in the greater Austin area, you’re in an especially sweet spot. Austin is forecasted to claim the top position with an annual job growth rate of 2.09%! Over the next five years, this area is expected to add around 150,300 wage and salary jobs. That’s a big leap for a city already buzzing with innovation and creativity!
But it’s not just the big cities that are getting in on this job surge. Smaller metropolitan areas are also stepping up. Places like Midland, Brownsville-Harlingen, and Tyler are looking at substantial job increases, proving that opportunity can be found all across the Lone Star State. For instance, El Paso is set to welcome about 34,700 new positions in various industries over the next five years.
In May, Texas made headlines by adding a record-setting 28,100 new jobs, bringing the total to a staggering 14.3 million jobs in the state. To put this into perspective, the national job increase only showed a growth of 1.1% during the same period. The Texas labor force also hit nearly 15.84 million workers, while the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%—not too shabby indeed!
The trade, transportation, and utilities sector were the champions in job growth, contributing 8,400 new jobs in May alone! Not far behind was the leisure and hospitality sector, which added 8,200 jobs, particularly thriving in the San Antonio and Austin regions with impressive figures of 2,400 and 3,700 new jobs respectively.
As we continue through 2025, Texas is not backing down. From June 2024 to June 2025, the state added 198,300 non-farm jobs, surpassing national growth rates and showcasing solid opportunities for future employment. The statistics reveal that the civilian labor force in Texas has reached a record high of 15,850,100 individuals, which is fueling the state’s economy.
As we look ahead to the coming years, Texas seems poised for a robust economic future. Even regions that faced challenges, such as the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area, are expected to add around 30,000 jobs. Texas is embracing growth with open arms and is the place to be for anyone looking to roll up their sleeves and dive into a rewarding career!
So, whether you’re a job seeker or simply someone who enjoys following the trends of our state’s thriving economy, keep your eyes peeled as Texas continues to make waves in the job market. It’s an exciting time to be a Texan, and the opportunities are just getting started!
