Born on February 17, 1956, in Houston, Texas, Mark was the son of the late Richard Timothy Clewis Jr. and Catherine Bernice Clewis. He spent his early years in both Houston and Dallas, ultimately returning to Houston to raise his family and leave a lasting impact on his community.
A proud alumnus of the University of Houston, Mark demonstrated a lifelong passion for the Cougars, consistently rallying support for the basketball and football teams. His family recalls his profound Cougar pride, which often sparked spirited conversations during family gatherings.
Throughout his career, Mark dedicated himself to the oil and gas industry, culminating his professional journey at Worley. His tenure included a notable 12 years working closely alongside his son, Eric, which proved a treasured experience for both. In his retirement, Mark relocated to Little Elm to be near his eldest son and his grandchildren, reinforcing his strong commitment to family.
Mark is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Sally Jean Clewis, and their three children: Ryan (married to Jenna), Eric (married to Chelsea), and Kelly (married to Juan). He was immensely proud of his children and took great joy in their life partners. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Liam (10) and Adrienne (7), who provided him with much joy and laughter during his life. Additionally, he is survived by his brother Robert Paul Clewis (often called Markie) and mother-in-law Mary Helen Byrnes, along with a large extended family and many close friends.
Mark’s life was marked by integrity and service, deeply rooted in his faith. He dedicated over 30 years to his local water board in Houston, serving in various roles, including President. Through this service, Mark forged strong bonds within the community, highlighting his personal commitment to improving the lives of others.
In his personal life, Mark enjoyed the camaraderie of sports, particularly Houston sports teams, as well as activities like golf, history, and annual family trips to the Texas Hill Country. He shared special connections with each of his children—golfing with Ryan, enjoying Liverpool soccer with Eric, and bonding over music with Kelly. Mark was also an animal lover, building strong bonds with his dogs, especially his golden retriever, Ben. He is remembered for his caring nature towards animals and reunites with beloved pets that have passed, including Eli, Odin, and Tyler.
Mark’s friends and family describe him as wise, dependable, gentle, and loyal, with a sharp wit and a deep intellect. His mentoring of youth and his unwavering support uplifted friends and family, making him a true anchor in their lives.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Thursday, June 12th, at Prince of Peace Catholic Community in Houston, Texas. The family will welcome guests starting at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass at 10:30 a.m., and a luncheon in the church hall thereafter. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to local animal shelters, reflecting Mark’s enduring love for animals and his commitment to community service.
