Mary Susan Richards Houston, 81, passed away on June 20, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of family devotion and community involvement. Visitation is set for July 7, 2025, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Heights Funeral Home, followed by her funeral service on July 8, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Both events will occur at Heights Funeral Home, located at 1317 Heights Blvd, Houston, TX 77008. A reception will take place after the funeral service, running from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, before a committal service at Woodlawn Cemetery from 1:30 pm to 2:00 pm.
Mary was born on September 19, 1943, in Caldwell County, Texas. She was the daughter of Percy Richards and Bessie Tinsbloom Richards, both of whom predeceased her. Throughout her life, Mary was known for her strong family ties and her active role in the community.
Mary was a devoted member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Valdese, where she participated in various church activities. Professionally, she was formerly employed by Doughton Manufacturing, contributing to her community not only through her work but also through her caring nature.
Mary was married to David Samuel Houston Sr., who preceded her in death. She is survived by five children: David Houston Jr., Richard “Rick” Houston, Rebecca Houston Miller, Keith Houston (and wife Melissa), and Angela “Darlene” Munday (and husband Melvin).
In addition, Mary is survived by her sister Ann Lockee, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who have cherished memories with her. Her grandchildren include Johnathan Miller (and wife Jessica), Keisha Smith (and husband Anthony), Michele Harrison (and husband Calvin), Mindy Mitchem (and husband Roger), Joshua Houston (and wife Taylor), Hannah Houston, Caleb Houston, Mary Houston, Sarah Cole (and husband Ethan), Leah Houston, Tyler Carey (and wife Lauren), Cash Norman (and girlfriend Hannah), and Emma Norman. Mary was a proud grandmother to a number of great-grandchildren, including Peyton Smith, Brooklynn Harrison, Paisley Smith, Nate Miller, Anona Church, Aubree Smith, Noah Mitchem, Makenzee Houston, Clara Carey, Asher Smith, Braxton Houston, Preston Houston, Atticus Church, Eileena Carey, Maddox Houston, Dallas Houston, Nolan Norman, Avery Cole, Jacob Cole, and Waylon.
Mary was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Richard James “Pete” Richards and Johnny Richards, as well as her granddaughter Kelsey Renee Houston. The loss of these loved ones has been deeply felt by the family, who now come together to celebrate her life and the influence she had on each of them.
Known for her loving relationships and spirited community engagement, Mary often extended her hand to help those around her. Her life was characterized by compassion, a sense of duty to her family, and an unwavering spirit that will be missed by everyone who knew her.
As family and friends gather to pay their respects, they remember Mary as a cornerstone of their lives—a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend. The impact of her life will continue within her family and beyond.
