New York — Newsweek, in collaboration with Statista, has released its first comprehensive ranking of America’s Leading Doctors for 2025, showcasing over 2,800 physicians across 15 different specialties. This significant ranking serves as a resource for patients seeking trustworthy, data-driven information to make informed health choices.
The rankings are categorized by specialty, with each category featuring between 175 and 200 doctors. The top 30 are ranked numerically, while the remaining specialists are listed in alphabetical order. The physicians included in this list can be affiliated with up to three hospitals, assessed based on patient volume and research data. Some doctors may also work independently in private practices or specialized institutes.
Recognizing the arduous training and dedication required to excel in the medical field, the evaluation process highlighted the usual challenges faced by practitioners. Dr. Leonard Girardi, identified as the leading cardiothoracic surgeon, stresses the importance of commitment and passion in his profession.
To evaluate the ranked doctors, a multitude of factors were taken into consideration, including performance data, peer recommendations, quality assessments, and certifications. The performance metrics were drawn from Medicare Fee-for-Service claims and CareJourney, providing insights into treatment episodes, patient mortality rates, unplanned readmissions, and average payment figures. Notably, doctors managing a large patient load were marked as “High Performance,” indicated by specific ribbons within the rankings.
Peer recommendations were a significant part of the evaluation, obtained through an extensive online survey involving thousands of medical professionals nationwide. Factors such as patient care quality, utilization of the latest medical technology, and a doctor’s expertise were integral to the recommendations.
The data weighted in the rankings reflects various factors: doctor performance accounted for 60%, peer recommendations comprised 27.5%, quality assessments made up 7.5%, and certifications carried a weight of 5%. This thorough methodology aims to accurately represent the evolving landscape of medical specialties and the burgeoning technologies enhancing patient care.
Noteworthy ranked physicians include Dr. Joseph Ricotta, who holds the second rank in vascular surgery and is recognized for his contributions toward the advancement of minimally invasive procedures and AI tools in patient treatment. Additionally, Dr. Martin Weiser, the top colorectal surgeon, is noted for his approach to personalized care for younger patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer, prioritizing their long-term well-being.
Throughout this ranking process, attributes such as community service and transparency in patient care emerged as vital components for specialists, reinforcing the principle that high-quality medical care extends beyond clinical assessments to include holistic support for patients.
The newly released rankings mark an important milestone as they are the first of their kind, expanding to include a broader range of medical specialists compared to previous individual rankings, such as those for vascular and spine surgeons. By systematically recognizing excellence across various medical domains, this comprehensive ranking serves as an essential touchstone for patients navigating the healthcare system.
This substantial initiative not only aims to enhance the visibility of leading medical professionals but also empowers patients with valuable insights that inform their healthcare decisions. As advancements in medicine continue to grow, these rankings reflect the importance of adapting to new methodologies and technological innovation in delivering superior patient care.
