A modern tech office in Houston, showcasing the city's growing tech workforce.
Houston’s tech employment is expected to rise by 2.1%, reaching 158,176 professionals in 2025. This growth highlights the city’s robust technology sector, with significant contributions from various industries. Texas is projected to lead the nation in tech job additions, bolstered by initiatives in the semiconductor industry. Major developments, including new factories from Nvidia and Apple, promise to enhance Houston’s position within the tech landscape. As demand for tech services increases, infrastructure developments are set to support this booming sector.
Houston’s tech employment is projected to rise by 2.1% in 2025, bringing the total number of tech professionals in the metro area to 158,176. This marks an increase from last year’s estimated 154,905 professionals, highlighting the city’s ongoing growth in the technology sector.
The forecast accounts for tech workers across various industries, not solely those employed directly in tech companies. Approximately 40% of tech professionals in Houston are engaged in the tech sector, while the remaining 60% work in other fields that require technological expertise.
From 2019 to 2025, Houston saw a significant growth of 16.6% in tech employment, placing the city eighth among major metropolitan areas for new tech job additions expected this year. In total, Houston is set to see 3,271 new tech jobs created. Comparatively, Dallas is expected to lead the nation by adding 13,997 new tech jobs, followed by Austin with 7,750 and San Antonio with 1,617.
Texas ranks first nationally in projected tech worker additions for 2025, with a total of 40,051 jobs expected to be added. This is a marked increase from the 8,181 jobs projected to be added in 2024. Last year, Texas boasted a tech workforce of 972,747, making it the second-largest tech workforce in the country.
The future looks promising for Texas’ tech industry, with a forecasted 24% increase in tech jobs from 2025 to 2035, positioning the state fourth nationally. This growth is supported by a substantial financial commitment of approximately $1.4 billion aimed at enhancing the semiconductor industry, which is expected to drive further job creation in tech.
In 2023, Texas launched the Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund to encourage research and manufacturing in the semiconductor field. State lawmakers allocated $698.3 million to this fund, with an additional $660 million designated for establishing semiconductor research and development centers at the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University.
In a major development for the local tech landscape, chip manufacturers Nvidia and Foxconn are constructing a factory in Houston that will focus on producing AI supercomputers, which Nvidia refers to as “the engines of a new type of data center created for processing artificial intelligence.” This advancement is expected to further bolster Houston’s prominence in the tech industry.
Additionally, Apple is planning to open a 250,000-square-foot factory in Houston dedicated to manufacturing servers that will support its AI business, forming part of a broader nationwide expansion with a budget of $500 million.
Texas has experienced a 38% increase in data center jobs from 2018 to 2024, establishing itself as a significant player in this area. Major states contributing to nationwide data center employment include California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Georgia, together accounting for over 40% of total jobs.
As the demand for electricity from major users, including data centers, is expected to surge by nearly 60% between 2024 and 2025, according to forecasts by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the infrastructure developments surrounding tech and data centers will continue to be a crucial focus for local and state authorities.
With these developments, Houston is firmly positioned to capitalize on the growing tech employment landscape, driven by advancements in the semiconductor industry and a commitment to research and development initiatives.
