A SWAT team responded to a Burger King standoff in Houston after a burglar barricaded himself inside following a break-in. Authorities apprehended one suspect but were unable to locate the second suspect, leading to prolonged negotiations. A SWAT team was deployed to a Burger King in Houston early Monday morning after deputies encountered a barricaded suspect following a burglary incident. The situation began around 3 a.m. local time when authorities received reports of a break-in at the restaurant.
An employee discovered the burglary upon arriving for their shift and promptly called 911. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found two men inside the Burger King who allegedly entered the premises through a drive-through window. One suspect was apprehended without incident; however, the second suspect was believed to have barricaded himself in the attic of the restaurant.
Major Earl Dean from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office indicated that authorities had heard movement within the restaurant and had video footage suggesting that the second suspect remained inside. As a result, a standoff commenced with the SWAT team dispatched to locate the barricaded individual.
Once on the scene, SWAT team members entered the Burger King to search for the remaining suspect. However, initial efforts to locate him proved unsuccessful. Authorities speculated that the suspect may have been hiding and possibly armed, though they emphasized that they did not consider the public to be at risk during the standoff.
Efforts to flush out the suspect included the use of gas canisters and pepper spray. Despite these measures, the situation continued for several hours, with the SWAT team concluding their operation around noon after failing to find the suspect.
In light of the incident, the Burger King remained closed for the remainder of the day while deputies maintained a presence at the location to monitor ongoing developments. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez provided updates throughout the day regarding the situation, indicating that efforts to resolve the standoff and locate the second suspect were ongoing.
