Houston postal worker ensuring safety while delivering mail.
Houston has recorded 65 dog attacks on USPS workers, ranking second in the nation for such incidents. The figure reflects a significant increase compared to previous years. The USPS is advocating for responsible pet ownership and safety measures to help reduce these attacks, while specialized training for postal workers is also being implemented. With concerns rising, the importance of pet owner responsibility and preventive actions is emphasized to ensure the safety of both mail carriers and pets.
Houston has recorded 65 dog attacks on U.S. Postal Service (USPS) workers in 2024, placing the city second in the nation for such incidents. Only Los Angeles had a higher number with 77 attacks this year.
This alarming statistic marks a notable increase in the frequency of dog attacks in Houston compared to the previous years. From 2021 to 2023, the number of dog attacks on postal workers in Houston ranged from 54 to 57 annually. However, the current year’s data shows a significant uptick to 65 incidents.
Despite this upward trend, the 2024 figure is a decrease from the peak of 85 attacks that were recorded in 2019, the highest number in the last decade. Houston has consistently ranked either first or second in the annual statistics pertaining to dog attacks on postal workers for the past ten years.
In addition to Houston and Los Angeles, other cities in Texas have also reported a considerable number of dog attacks on postal workers. Dallas recorded 43 attacks, ranking sixth nationally, while San Antonio reported 32 incidents. Overall, Texas placed second among states in 2024 with a total of 438 dog attacks, following California, which topped the list.
According to USPS data, there were over 6,000 reported incidents of dog attacks on postal workers across the United States in the last year. These figures have prompted the USPS to launch a National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign aimed at educating dog owners about ways to prevent these attacks.
To improve safety during mail deliveries, the USPS recommends that dog owners keep their pets secured when postal workers are on their routes. This simple action can significantly reduce the risk of dog attacks, ensuring a safer environment for both mail carriers and pets.
Along with public education efforts, postal employees undergo specialized training to help them navigate properties where dogs are present. They are instructed on how to assess potential risks and respond appropriately if faced with aggressive dogs. These training programs focus on equipping postal workers with the knowledge and skills to handle encounters with dogs safely and effectively.
In situations where postal workers feel unsafe due to unsecured dogs or frequent incidents of attacks, they have the authority to halt mail delivery. This precaution is in place to ensure the safety of both postal workers and the pets involved.
The USPS emphasizes the critical importance of responsible pet ownership. Dog owners are encouraged to train their pets to ensure appropriate behaviors that prevent attacks. By promoting better training and management of pets, the USPS hopes to mitigate the occurrence of dog attacks and enhance the safety of postal workers delivering mail in neighborhoods.
As dog attacks on postal workers continue to be a pressing concern, cities like Houston are actively seeking solutions to reduce these incidents. Through educational campaigns and responsible pet ownership practices, there is hope for creating a safer environment for postal employees and the communities they serve.
