Houston Community Mourns the Passing of Esteemed Nurse and Restaurateur Jane Lee Chung

Houston, Texas — Jane Lee Chung, a beloved member of the Houston community and renowned registered nurse, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2025, at the age of 91. Jane was remembered as a compassionate friend and a dedicated healthcare worker who touched the lives of many.

Born in Taishan, Guangdong, China, Jane immigrated to Houston in 1951 to join her parents. She was a graduate of True Light Girls School in Hong Kong and later earned her diploma as a Registered Nurse from the University of Houston College of Nursing in 1957. Jane started her career at Hermann Hospital, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, and was among the first group of nurses to help open Park Plaza Hospital. Her service continued as a field nurse for the City of Houston Health Department, where she provided vital medical care to the residents of the Sunnyside area.

In 1995, Jane’s exemplary service was recognized when she was voted the City of Houston Health Department’s Best Registered Nurse, highlighting her dedication and commitment to patient care. She retired from the health department the same year, cherishing the friendships she had built with colleagues and patients over her extensive career.

In addition to her nursing career, Jane was also a well-known restaurateur, having been a partner in her father’s former restaurant, Lee’s Den. She was committed to ensuring that every customer left satisfied and well-fed, embodying the spirit of hospitality.

Personal Life and Community Involvement

Jane was married to William Chung for 67 years and is survived by her two sons and their respective daughters-in-law. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, two sisters, one brother, their spouses, and an extended family that includes nieces, nephews, a great niece, a great nephew, and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Yin Chung Lee and Tuey Lun Wong.

Jane was an active member of the Chinese Baptist Church and the Chinese Professional Club, having established a strong bond with her contemporaries and contributing to the community through her involvement in various outreach programs. The family has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Brazos Towers at Bayou Manor for their loving care during Jane’s final days.

Memorial Services

A visitation for Jane Lee Chung will take place at Memorial Oaks Cemetery Chapel on August 8, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Following this, a Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Chinese Baptist Church located at 900 Brogden Rd, Houston, TX 77024, on August 9, 2025, at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to the Chinese Baptist Church to honor Jane’s legacy and continuing commitment to the community.

Jane Lee Chung leaves behind a rich legacy of compassion, hard work, and an unwavering dedication to her community and profession. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
