Families receiving school supplies at the Houston Back to School Fair

Houston is set to host a series of significant back-to-school events providing essential support for families and students. The Mayor’s Back to School & Health Fair, taking place at the George R. Houston is gearing up for a series of major back-to-school events aimed at supporting families and students in need as the new academic year approaches. On Saturday, August 2, 2025, the Mayor’s Back to School & Health Fair will take place at the George R. Brown Convention Center from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., providing 20,000 free backpacks filled with essential school supplies to economically disadvantaged elementary students. In addition to the backpacks, families will also have access to a range of free health services, including dental and vision screenings, mental health evaluations, and routine immunizations.

Coinciding with the Mayor’s fair, multiple events across the Houston area aim to further assist families. The Baytown Back-to-School Bash is scheduled for the same day from 8 to 10 a.m. at Robert E. Lee School, where children can also receive backpacks stocked with school supplies. Providing further assistance to families, local dealerships, led by Ken Garff Automotive Group, are hosting three backpack giveaway events throughout July and August.

Additionally, the Mega Karaoke DJ Center will hold a Backpack Giveaway on August 2 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., encouraging kids to sing a song in exchange for a free backpack. Meanwhile, Cypress Assistance Ministries is organizing a drive-thru event on the same day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., distributing backpacks and clothing vouchers for students in the Cy-Fair Independent School District.

Later in the day on August 2, the Back 2 School Fest, hosted by Phoenix Rising Records, will feature free school supplies, live music, and educational activities from 4 to 7 p.m.. Gillman Nissan will hold its own backpack event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering free backpacks and food. In Katy, the Children’s Lighthouse Back to School Bash will be hosting school supply giveaways along with local vendors from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the same day.

Additional events continue into the following week, such as the YMCA Back to School Bash on August 5 at 6 p.m., that will include games, food trucks, and an opportunity to pre-request free backpacks. Missouri City will host its 6th Annual Back 2 School Mega Fest on August 8 from 5:30 to 8 p.m., distributing free backpacks and other school supplies along with fun activities.

For those who miss previous opportunities, the Baytown Community Center will hold its Back to School Fair on August 9 starting at 8 a.m., while the Urban Air Back to School Bash will follow the same day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring free jump time and kids’ games. A free Back to School Community Fair will be held at Living Word Church on August 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering haircuts and a health fair.

The MultiCultural Center in Webster is set to host a free Back to School Health Fair on August 16 from 10 a.m. to noon, providing haircuts and health services for attendees. The exciting schedule kicks off a day earlier with a Back-to-School Bash hosted by the Houston Rockets and Reliant at Moody Community Center on August 1 from 4-7 p.m.. This event aims to provide backpacks to up to 1,000 students, alongside free health screenings, food, and entertainment.

These events collectively represent a significant community effort to ensure children in Houston have the necessary supplies and support as they prepare to return to school. Families are encouraged to take advantage of these resources to help ease the back-to-school transition.
