Sargent, Texas – Ernest “Ernie” Howerton, a cherished ophthalmologist and rancher, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, at the age of 79. His contributions to the medical field and his generous nature will be remembered by family, friends, and colleagues.
Ernie was born on November 3, 1945, in San Antonio, Texas, to Ernest and Bessie Howerton. He grew up alongside his sisters, Betsy and Carolyn, and developed an adventurous spirit during his childhood. Memories of bareback horse riding, barefoot water skiing, and building cars and engines highlighted his early years.
His journey in education began at Colorado State University, where he engaged in skiing but found studying to be a challenge. Ernie later transferred to the University of Texas in Austin, where he joined the Sigma Nu fraternity. There, he excelled both socially and academically, paving his path toward a career in medicine.
Ernie earned a master’s degree and a medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) located in Galveston, Texas. Following his studies, he completed his residency specializing in ophthalmology at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. His time in Galveston also marked a significant personal milestone as he met Janey Thayer, who would become the love of his life.
As a couple, Ernie and Janey established a successful ophthalmology practice in Austin. While Ernie focused on performing surgeries, Janey managed the office, creating a business that thrived under their partnership characterized by love and mutual respect. Together, they built a fulfilling life centered around their shared professional and personal aspirations.
In retirement, Ernie transitioned from medicine to ranching, happily tending to his ranch and raising longhorns. After completing various projects on the ranch, he sold the property and moved to a peaceful sanctuary in Sargent, Texas, which brought him a sense of serenity and fulfillment.
Ernie is survived by his beloved wife Janey, his sisters Betsy Babbington and Carolyn Schaffer, and a broad network of relatives including brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He is widely remembered for his generosity, kindness, and willingness to help anyone in need. Those who had the privilege of knowing Ernie recall his warm heart, gentle spirit, and deep devotion to his family.
In lieu of flowers, Ernie’s family requests that friends honor his memory with a toast and carry forward his spirit of generosity, reflecting the essence of the man he was throughout his life.
