HOUSTON, Texas – DiDi Chavis has become a symbol of perseverance and ambition, transforming her life through education amidst personal tragedies. Her journey exemplifies the transformative power of online learning at the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) and her determination to succeed in her professional career.
After starting her educational journey as a working single mother, Chavis initially had her doubts about online education. However, she soon discovered that it provided the necessary flexibility to balance her responsibilities while pursuing her degree. In 2019, she achieved a significant milestone by earning her Bachelor of Arts in English, with a concentration in creative writing.
Following her graduation, Chavis secured a position in the Katy Independent School District (Katy ISD) as an administrative professional for the Chief Operating Officer. Her career progressed after she was encouraged by her COO to further her education. This led her to explore UHV’s VOICE program, which offers an alternative teaching certification and leads to a Master of Education degree.
Chavis completed her Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction-Higher Education and Secondary Education in December 2024. She set two personal goals for herself: to work in the field of education and to earn a graduate degree. During her master’s program, the dynamics at Katy ISD shifted due to new leadership, presenting her with the opportunity to take on a liaison role that broadened her professional horizons.
In May 2020, amidst the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chavis applied for the position of council chief of staff for Council District K in Houston. Leading a team during this crisis brought unique challenges as her team worked remotely while she managed responsibilities from the office. The communication skills she honed during her time at UHV proved invaluable in navigating this unfamiliar landscape.
In addition to her professional challenges, Chavis experienced profound personal losses. She faced the deaths of her mother and brother while pursuing her studies but was supported by UHV faculty who provided assistance and encouragement as she managed her academic and personal responsibilities. Professors at UHV, including those who facilitated her writing endeavors and offered guidance during her graduate studies, played a significant role in her success.
Chavis proudly graduated with her master’s degree on December 14, 2024, one day after her daughter achieved her academic honor of graduating summa cum laude from the University of Houston. Her daughter is now on a path of her own, teaching in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, while participating in a fellowship with Teach for America and attending graduate school at Louisiana State University.
Chavis conveys a strong message to her daughter and others: pursuing one’s dreams is achievable despite the challenges that may arise. Her educational journey serves not only as an inspiration for her family but as a confirmation of the vital role education plays in personal and professional development.
UHV’s associate dean, Mary Lasater, highlighted Chavis’ resilience and tenacity as commendable qualities that have led to her success. Her story continues to inspire and emphasize the importance of pursuing education as a means to overcome hardships and achieve future aspirations.
