Born on September 9, 1976, in Pasadena, Texas, David was the son of David Baynard Smith and Sherry Lynn Bauer. His early life was marked by freedom and adventure, as he lived in various locations, including Georgia, Tennessee, France, Australia, and South Florida. During these formative years, David’s family nurtured his love for the outdoors and fishing, especially his grandmother, whom he affectionately referred to as “Mema.” This upbringing instilled in him a passion for nature and adventure, leading him to enjoy activities such as fishing and kayaking.

David’s intellectual journey began at the University of Houston’s Honors College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance. He furthered his education by obtaining a Master of Science in Finance from Texas A&M University. Over nearly 25 years in the finance industry, he established himself as a highly skilled equity research analyst specializing in oil field services. His colleagues often referred to him as the “Rig Whisperer,” a testament to his in-depth knowledge and innovative strategies within his field.

David’s family life was filled with love and support. He was married to Nadine Moustafa for over 13 years, and together, they created a nurturing environment for their twin sons, Layth and Zain. Additionally, David had two older children, Audrey and Speir, from a previous marriage. A devoted father, he prioritized family above all else, striving to maintain strong relationships with all four children. He fostered an atmosphere that encouraged his children to embrace their authenticity, emphasizing the importance of being true to oneself.

A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, October 19, at 10:00 a.m. at Earthman Funeral Directors in Houston, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Union of Concerned Scientists or the World Food Programme, both of which reflect David’s commitment to environmental sustainability and global equity.
