Phoenix, AZ – The Arizona Wildcats clinched a No. 4 seed in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament following a decisive 8-1 victory over the Houston Cougars, which concluded their regular season with a commendable record of 36-18 and 18-12 in conference play. This win, the Wildcats’ final game of the regular season, came as the team sought to regain momentum after struggling through a tough stretch where they lost four of five matches.
The performance against Houston provided much-needed reassurance heading into the postseason, as Arizona’s strong finish will give them an extra day of rest before their quarterfinal matchup. The Wildcats secured their No. 4 seed after Arizona State University (ASU) suffered a loss to Oklahoma State, allowing Arizona to benefit from the situation.
In the Big 12 Tournament, Arizona will face the winner of a first-round contest between ASU and BYU at 7 a.m. PT. The top four seeds, including Arizona, receive a bye into the quarterfinals, which are set to be held on Thursday at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
Arizona took control of the final game against Houston after initially falling behind when Tyler Broussard hit a home run off Wildcats pitcher Smith Bailey, who made his first career quality start allowing only three hits over six innings. The Wildcats quickly answered back, regaining the lead in the second inning with runs scored by Easton Breyfogle and Tommy Splaine. Although Breyfogle exited the game due to an apparent injury, his contributions were critical to Arizona’s success.
Adonys Guzman added a significant two-run double in the third inning, which was followed by a powerful two-run home run from Andrew Cain. Cain had an impressive game, tallying three extra-base hits. Additionally, Mason White hit his 42nd career home run, moving closer to the second spot on Arizona’s all-time list, and achieving his 101st career extra-base hit.
This season marked the best regular-season win total for head coach Chip Hale, as the Wildcats surpassed their previous record of 35 wins established in 2022. The Wildcats’ strong finish included a road record of 9-6 during their inaugural season in the Big 12, matching last year’s performance when they competed in the Pac-12.
In addition to offensive contributions, Arizona’s pitching staff played a key role in their success against Houston. Pitchers Julian Tonghini, Hunter Alberini, and Tony Pluta combined to throw scoreless innings, collectively striking out six of the eleven batters they faced, which solidified the team’s defensive strategy.
