HOUSTON, Texas — Two Houston-area universities are making it easier for local high school seniors to know where they stand before they ever finish an application.
Houston Christian University said this week that Houston ISD seniors with a 3.0 grade point average can be admitted for next fall without filing a traditional application.
The University of Houston-Clear Lake has its own deal with Dickinson ISD. It is the university’s first guaranteed admission agreement with a school district, and it could reach roughly 515 Dickinson seniors.
The Clear Lake terms start with students applying for fall 2027. Dickinson seniors with an unweighted GPA of 2.75 or better on a 4.0 scale are guaranteed a spot once they complete the application and send an official transcript. Test scores are optional, the $45 fee is waived for those who qualify, and some majors may set extra requirements.
Both schools are trying to grow. UHCL enrolled about 7,900 students this fall, with roughly 1,500 new undergraduates, up 17% from a year earlier. HCU now counts 5,285 students and is aiming for 10,000, and its freshman class this fall topped 1,070, a 12% jump.
UHCL President Richard Walker has said the partnership is meant to remove uncertainty for students and show families that a four-year degree is within reach.
Programs like these are spreading nationally as colleges try to widen their applicant pools. Texas already has the Top 10% rule, under which Texas students who finish near the top of their class are automatically admitted to public universities.
