Houston, Texas – Elvena Gainey-Reed Bryant, a beloved matriarch and a symbol of resilience and love, passed away on August 15, 2025, at the remarkable age of 109 years and 6 months. Known affectionately as “MaVena,” she was the last surviving member of her family, having outlived both her biological and adopted siblings as well as her husband and children.
Elvena was born on February 16, 1916, to Thomas and Corine Laurant-Gainey. Tragically, she lost both of her parents at a young age and was raised by her adopted father, Albert Reed. Among her family of fourteen children, nine Gainey siblings and six Reed siblings had passed before her, marking Elvena as the matriarch of her family.
In her early life, Elvena married Aaron Dagins Sr. in 1935, and together they had one son, Aaron Dagins Jr., who also preceded her in death. In 1939, she married Adolph Bryant Sr. in Silver Creek, Mississippi, and together they had three children: Elnoria, Doretha, and Adolph Bryant Jr., who also passed away. Elvena’s immediate family and extensive lineage comprised a strong legacy of 52 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren, spanning seven generations and various states.
Elvena graduated from Hammond High School and pursued further education as a Nurse’s Aide in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1956, she moved to Houston, where she joined the Booker Street House of Deliverance Church and later the Faith House of Prayer Holiness Church, serving faithfully as Church Mother. As of 2025, at the age of 109, she was recognized as the eldest Church Mother at the Good Samaritan Church.
Known for her generous spirit, Elvena often shared her limited resources with those in need, exemplifying her loving nature. She was famous for her cooking, particularly her prized lemon cakes, which became a staple during family gatherings and holidays. Beyond the kitchen, Elvena had many interests, including gardening, raising rabbits, and even repairing automobiles, displaying a hands-on aptitude for fixing motors and transmissions.
Throughout her life, Elvena overcame numerous challenges, including being run over in 1969 and receiving a colon cancer diagnosis at the age of 78 in 1994. Despite these adversities, she maintained a strong faith, praying daily and fostering spiritual strength within her family. Elvena deeply participated in the lives of her children and grandchildren, providing unwavering care and support.
In her later years, Elvena showed support for historical political progress, voting for Barack Obama and Kamala Harris, and expressing pride in their achievements. As a “domestic engineer,” she creatively rebranded her work, striving to provide for her family through multiple jobs as needed.
Elvena’s love for her family extended beyond traditional roles, as she frequently shared historical tales about their roots and experiences. Her wisdom, resilience, and loving nature have left a profound impact not only on her family but also on the wider community. Her legacy will be remembered, honoring a life lived with grace and dedication.
The passing of Elvena Gainey-Reed Bryant marks the end of an era for her family and friends, who carry forward the lessons of love and perseverance she imparted throughout her long and fruitful life.
