Houston Food Bank Collects Supplies to Support Teachers Amid Challenging Budget Cuts

The Houston Food Bank is launching its 2025 Share Your School Supplies Drive to support local teachers struggling with budget cuts and supply shortages. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the food bank provided 140 million meals to individuals across 18 counties, emphasizing its role in aiding not just food security but also educational resources. With an alarming 62% of students arriving at school without necessary supplies, this initiative aims to replenish classrooms and assist educators financially.

According to a survey conducted by Adopt A Classroom, teachers spent, on average, $895 out of pocket for school supplies during the 2024-2025 school year. The Share Your School Supplies Drive is designed to collect essential items—such as crayons, highlighters, markers, pencils, folders, pens, and spiral notebooks—and raise funds to adequately stock classrooms for teachers in need.

Tackling the Issue

The need for school supplies is pressing. As teachers indicate, having supplies available later in the semester is as crucial as at the start of the school year. The Houston Food Bank has made a significant commitment to support low-income schools, a relationship that traces back nearly 20 years with the inception of its Backpack Buddy program. In addition to this, the food bank also runs School Market and Kids Cafe programs, which further help provide resources and meals to students and teachers.

Brian Greene, president and CEO of the Houston Food Bank, highlighted the organization’s capability to optimize resources for community welfare. The food bank leverages 60 trucks daily to distribute food and supplies efficiently to 1,600 partners, ensuring that necessary items reach classrooms that need them most. Last year alone, the food bank managed to distribute supplies to approximately 11,000 teachers across 260 schools.

The Community Steps Up

In response to the increased demand for school supplies, the community has actively contributed to the Share Your School Supplies Drive, raising $46,682.82 in cash and supply donations so far. Some locations even managed to collect enough supplies to fill two school buses, showcasing robust community engagement. Local firefighters significantly supported this effort in Galveston, and volunteers from various organizations, including students from Texas A&M University, are participating actively in the supply drive.

The sought-after donations not only remain within the community but specifically aim to support teachers and students in regions such as Lamar CISD, where financial struggles are pronounced. The urgency of the drive is further intensified by impending federal funding cuts amounting to $11 million, which threaten the operational capabilities of local educational programs.

Impact on Education

The average cost of school supplies has increased by 49% since 2015, prompting many teachers to consider secondary jobs to alleviate financial strain. Moreover, over 90% of teachers have reported using personal funds to ensure their classrooms are adequately equipped, a considerable burden amid rising costs. These challenges reflect the broader educational landscape where not having regular meals can hinder a child’s development just as much as lacking basic school supplies can impede their educational growth.

A wealth of evidence shows that even a single pencil can have a profound impact on a child’s education. The Houston Food Bank’s initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on teachers, thereby enhancing the quality of education for students across the region.
