Sunny landscape of Southeast Texas during summer

News Summary

Residents of Southeast Texas should prepare for a week of extreme heat with temperatures reaching the mid to high 90s. While rain chances remain low, a potential tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico may bring rainfall by the weekend. This weather system could lead to significant showers depending on its development, prompting locals to stay hydrated and vigilant against the heat.

Southeast Texas Weather Update: High Heat and Possible Tropical Disturbance Next Weekend

HOUSTON, TX—Residents of Southeast Texas should brace for a week of high temperatures and low rain chances as a strong high-pressure system settles over the region. However, weather forecasts reveal a potential tropical disturbance developing in the Gulf of Mexico, which may bring rain by next weekend.

Description of current conditions indicates that a low-pressure system is no longer affecting the area, allowing a strong high-pressure system located over the Florida Panhandle, Alabama, and Mississippi to shift westward. This weather pattern is expected to result in high temperatures and low rain chances for several days.

On Sunday morning, temperatures are forecasted to start in the upper 70s accompanied by partly to mostly cloudy skies. However, cloud cover is expected to dissipate after 9 a.m., leading to mostly sunny conditions throughout the day. By 11 a.m., Houston is projected to reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with afternoon highs climbing between 94 and 96 degrees.

The heat index, which factors in humidity to give a “feels-like” temperature, could be significantly higher, reaching between 103 and 106 degrees in the afternoon. With the UV index peaking between 11 and 12 in the early afternoon, there is a risk of sunburn on unprotected skin within just 10 minutes.

In terms of the upcoming week, Monday’s weather is expected to mirror Sunday’s, with highs remaining in the mid-90s. The most intense heat is likely to occur on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with predicted temperatures ranging from 96 to 98 degrees. Nighttime lows are also expected to stay warm, lingering in the upper 70s.

Despite the sweltering temperatures, rain chances throughout the week remain minimal, estimated at around 10% or less each day. Isolated showers may arise along the coast, but substantial precipitation seems unlikely until later in the week.

Long-range weather models suggest that a low to moderate potential for tropical development exists in the Gulf of Mexico by the end of this week. Forecasters are carefully monitoring the situation, as scattered showers and storms may occur by Friday. More significant rainfall is anticipated on Saturday and Sunday, depending on whether the tropical disturbance organizes into a tropical storm.

If the system develops, areas of Southeast Texas could experience heavy rain, although current predictions indicate that Louisiana might face higher rainfall chances, prompting flood watches in that region. The uncertainty surrounding this tropical disturbance is notable, as its disorganized nature makes accurate forecasting challenging.

All residents are advised to take precautionary measures while outdoors during this period of intense heat. Hydration is critical, and individuals with outdoor plans should remain vigilant about the high temperatures and humidity levels.
