Katherine Ferruzzo, a beloved camp counselor and recently graduated high school student, tragically lost her life during a severe flood in Texas Hill Country on July 4, 2025. Katherine was celebrated for her vibrant personality and dedication to helping others, particularly children with special needs. She heroically attempted to save her campers during this natural disaster.
At just 18 years old, Katherine had already made a significant impact on her community. Graduating from Memorial High School in Houston in May 2025, she was a standout student known for her spirited involvement in school activities and her commitment to volunteerism. Katherine participated in the Future Teachers Program where she assisted children with autism in the APPLE program at Frostwood Elementary for two years. Her passion for special education was clear as she aimed to become a special education teacher, with plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin.
Her impressive résumé included roles such as chapter president of the Texas Association of Future Educators, a member of Student Council, and honors from the National Honor Society and English National Honor Society. Katherine was affectionately dubbed the “Life of the Party” by her classmates and served on the Executive Board of the Student Council during her junior and senior years. Known for her infectious spirit and positive energy, she was chosen as “Head Babe” of the senior girls’ spirit organization.
A History of Service
Katherine’s commitment to community service was profound. She volunteered extensively through the National Charity League, focusing her efforts on organizations that support children with special needs. Her contributions were recognized with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, which she received for three consecutive years. Organizations she supported included The Center for Pursuit, The Miracle League, Gigi’s Playhouse, The Parish School, The Briarwood School, and Infinite Elevations.
Camp Mystic Legacy
Katherine spent her summers at Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas, where she developed a deep connection with the camp community. From 2015 to 2024, Katherine participated as a camper, later taking on important roles including junior assistant and Kiowa Tribe Captain. She was particularly excited about returning as a counselor for the Bubble Inn cabin in summer 2025. Katherine’s lively character, wit, and her ability to uplift those around her were hallmarks of her personality.
In her personal life, Katherine enjoyed adventures and experiences that reflected her vibrant character. In June 2025, she celebrated with friends in Europe and embraced the thrill of activities like skydiving in Switzerland. Her passions extended to fashion and family, as she loved the color pink and shared close bonds with her brothers and parents.
Tragic Loss and Community Response
Katherine’s life was cut short in a heroic act of bravery during unforeseen floods at Camp Mystic. Her family found meaning in her final moments through her Bible, which contained the verse Revelation 21:4, demonstrating her deep faith and compassion towards others.
The Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation has been established in her honor, primarily focusing on supporting children and individuals with special needs. Katherine is survived by her parents, Andrea and John Ferruzzo, her brothers Jack and Vincent, and additional family members.
Remembering Katherine
A vigil to honor Katherine will be held on July 16 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Houston. Following the vigil, a Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled at the same location on July 17. Friends and family are encouraged to support the Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation through donations in lieu of traditional remembrances.
