Flo Hyman’s Legacy

Flo Hyman is celebrated for her outstanding contributions to the sport of volleyball and the University of Houston, leading the team to two top-five finishes in the late 1970s. She achieved All-American status and was the recipient of the 1976 Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) national player of the year award. Hyman made history in 1977 as the first recipient of the Broderick Award, now known as the Honda Sports Award, in the sport of volleyball.

Her pioneering spirit extended beyond individual accolades. Hyman became the first female scholarship athlete in the University of Houston’s history, paving the way for future generations of female athletes. In addition to her collegiate success, Hyman was a crucial member of the U.S. volleyball team that boycotted the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. She later earned a medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

Hyman continued her volleyball career professionally, playing overseas in Japan. Tragically, she passed away in 1986 at the age of 31 due to Marfan syndrome, but her legacy continues to inspire many in the sport. Recently, this summer, she was posthumously inducted into the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame, further solidifying her impact on volleyball and sports in general.
