Explosion at Downtown Houston Hotel Injures Six Workers

An explosion at a hotel under construction in downtown Houston resulted in injuries to six construction workers on Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 11:08 a.m. at 1319 Texas Avenue, close to Austin Street.

Initial assessments by fire department officials suggested that the explosion was linked to a boiler; however, further investigations revealed that it was actually caused by a bank of tankless water heaters and a rupture in a natural gas line. The blast was powerful enough to blow out windows and damage the exterior walls on two sides of the 17-story building, which is part of a Holiday Inn Express and Staybridge Suites project.

All six injured workers were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, where they received treatment for burns, lacerations, and cuts. Fortunately, none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

The explosion inflicted significant structural damage to the construction site, resulting in extensive interior damage and a large hole in the roof of the building. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as glass and debris fell from the structure. Fortunately, the area was not heavily populated at the time of the blast.

Nearby resident Paul Navejar recounted hearing a loud boom before witnessing construction workers evacuate the site. The Houston Fire Department (HFD) deployed hazmat teams to the scene due to the hazardous materials involved in the explosion.

Authorities report that streets surrounding the area may remain closed for several hours or even days while evaluations of the building’s structural integrity are conducted. Fire Department Communications Director Brent Taylor noted that the consequences of the incident could have been more severe if it had occurred during peak hours with higher pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

In response to the explosion, multiple agencies, including the HFD Arson Division and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), are investigating the situation. Legal experts have indicated that such explosions often stem from improper installations or inadequate safety inspections, raising concerns about potential negligence in adhering to safety protocols.

The construction site began operations in October 2023 and was slated for completion in December. As the investigation continues, officials will assess the safety measures in place and determine any possible violations that may have contributed to the explosion.

Authorities are urging the public to stay clear of the area while they work to ensure the safety of the site and determine the correct course of action moving forward. Updates on the investigation and the condition of the injured workers are expected as more information becomes available.
