Election Day Cold Front Brings Storms, Cooler Air to Houston

Storm clouds building over open country

HOUSTON, Texas — Houston voters should plan to get to the polls early on Tuesday, when a cold front is set to push strong storms through the area on Election Day before ushering in the coolest air of the season so far.

Monday starts with patchy fog again across Southeast Texas, and a few spots could see dense fog, so drivers should slow down and keep their headlights on. The fog is expected to lift into partly sunny skies, with highs topping out in the 80s by afternoon, muggier air and a few isolated showers. The National Weather Service expects southeast winds of 5 to 10 mph on Monday, with gusts up to 20 mph, and a muggy night that stays near 72 degrees.

The front arrives Tuesday. The weather service puts the chance of rain at 90%, with a high near 79 before temperatures slide during the afternoon. Forecasters say the storms could bring widespread heavy rain, strong winds and hail, and Southeast Texas sits under a level 1 of 4 risk for flooding. Slow-moving downpours could cause street flooding in the usual low spots.

Timing matters for anyone heading out to vote. The heaviest rain looks to start in the late morning and continue into the evening, so the early hours offer the best window. Commuters should avoid driving through water on flooded roads.

Rain chances linger into Tuesday night before skies clear and the low drops to around 61. Wednesday brings sunshine and a high near 73, with a low around 58 that night. Thursday and Friday should bring plenty of sun, highs around 75 and little chance of rain, and Saturday looks mostly sunny with a high near 74, with morning lows dipping into the 50s.
