Houston

Authorities are investigating a series of bodies discovered in bayous around the Houston area within the last week, raising concerns in the community. At least four bodies have been recovered, with the incidents occurring in close succession and across different waterways.

The first body was found on Monday, September 15, in a canal located at the 13400 block of the East Freeway, near Greens Bayou. Shortly after, a second body was discovered on the same day in Brays Bayou at 4998 Medical Service Drive. Local police initially took the first body to the medical examiner’s office for identification, but no additional details were released at that time.

On Thursday, it became public that the body found in the canal belonged to 20-year-old Jade “Sage” McKissic, a student at the University of Houston who had been reported missing just the day before, September 14. McKissic was confirmed deceased four days later, and the medical examination did not reveal any signs of trauma or foul play. Notably, her body was located just 2.5 miles from the site of the second body found in Brays Bayou. Jade McKissic was a junior majoring in strategic communications and advertising and was both a resident and employee at the university.

The situation escalated on Tuesday, September 16, when a third body was discovered in White Oak Bayou at 2309 Taylor Street. Early indications suggested that this individual may have drowned. The following Saturday, another body was found at around 8 a.m. in a bayou at the 900 block of N York Street, though details surrounding this discovery remain undisclosed. Later that same day, authorities recovered a fifth body from Buffalo Bayou, which had been reported near North York Street.

The medical examiner’s office is currently tasked with determining the causes of death for all bodies found. As authorities grapple with these troubling occurrences, speculation surrounding a potential serial killer has surfaced on social media, given the timing and locations of the discoveries. Experts, however, have advised caution against drawing such conclusions.

Criminal Justice Professor Krista Gehring from the University of Houston Downtown noted that the diversity of the victims and the absence of common characteristics suggest that these incidents are likely unrelated. Retired Houston Police Captain Greg Fremin also pointed out that bodies recovered from bayous are frequently linked to natural occurrences or accidental deaths.

Despite the distressing nature of this spate of discoveries, authorities indicated that retrieving multiple bodies from waterways over a short period is not uncommon. Various environmental factors can lead to such findings, and the police are dedicated to conducting thorough investigations into each case to provide closure to the affected families and the community at large.

The series of discoveries underscores the importance of ongoing efforts in ensuring safety around Houston’s waterways which, while beautiful, can be treacherous. As investigations continue, local residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities to assist in overall community safety.
