She was highly regarded for her contributions to the Hispanic community in Houston through her work as a journalist and editor.
Born on May 11, 1935, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Hilda was the daughter of Osberto and Emilia Lemus Caballeros. She had a twin brother, Carlos, and was known for her academic excellence, obtaining a degree in accounting. Hilda began her professional career in local banks, where her intellect and strong work ethic quickly allowed her to ascend the corporate ladder. Her beauty also gained her recognition, as she was chosen to represent various banks in local beauty pageants.
In pursuit of furthering her education and mastering English, Hilda relocated to the United States. In 1961, she met Rogelio Delgado Noriega in Los Angeles. Their first date, a trip to the cinema to watch the film “Ben-Hur,” sparked a deep connection, leading to their marriage on August 19, 1961. Together, they raised four children: Sandra Ivonne Noriega, MD; Jaime Luynes Noriega, PhD; Erik Noriega; and Xochilt Karina Noriega.
A Faithful Life
Hilda was a devout Catholic who prayed the rosary almost daily, earning the nickname “prayer warrior” among family and friends. She was well-known for her heartfelt prayers for the health and wellbeing of those around her. Throughout her life, Hilda maintained a balance between her demanding career and her family responsibilities, ensuring her children felt loved and supported.
Journalistic Contributions
In 1974, Hilda co-founded Semanario El Mexica Newspaper in Houston, marking the city’s first Spanish-language newspaper. Visitation services will be held on September 18, 2025, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Funeraria Del Angel Crespo in Houston. A rosary service is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the same day. Funeral Mass will take place on September 19, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, followed by a Committal Service at 12 noon at Forest Park Lawndale.
