HOUSTON, Texas — Houston Astros first baseman Christian Walker is a Gold Glove winner again. He was named the American League’s best defender at his position Sunday night, the fourth Gold Glove of his career and his first in a Houston uniform.

Walker had won three in a row from 2022 through 2024 while playing for Arizona. This year he beat out two other AL finalists, Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Kansas City’s Vinnie Pasquantino. Cam Smith, the Astros right fielder, made the finalist list for the second year in a row, but that award went to Boston’s Wilyer Abreu for the third season running.

The honor marks a rebound. Walker’s defensive numbers slipped in 2025, his first season with Houston, when one tracking service had him at minus-7 runs saved after 33 runs saved across his last three years in Arizona. He went into the offseason determined to fix it, dropping 10 to 12 pounds to get quicker and working on his first step toward the ball.

Gold Gloves are decided by votes from managers and up to six coaches per team, who are barred from picking their own players, combined with a defensive index from the Society for American Baseball Research that counts for roughly a quarter of the result. An August update of that index had Walker second among AL first basemen.

The award carries a $75,000 bonus for Walker. It also puts him in select company. He is the third Astros first baseman to take home a Gold Glove, after Jeff Bagwell in 1994 and Yuli Gurriel in 2021, and the 15th player with at least four at the position. Atlanta’s Matt Olson also won his fourth Gold Glove at first base on the National League side.
