HOUSTON, Texas — Houston and the rest of Harris County are voting in the Nov. 3 midterm election faster than in any midterm the county has on record. County figures show voters turned in more than 624,000 ballots over the opening week of early voting.

That works out to roughly one of every five registered voters in the county, and it is the quickest midterm start in records that go back to 1998. Turnout was heavy from the opening bell, with more than 104,000 people voting in person on the first day.

The busiest site so far is the Richard and Meg Weekley center in Cypress, where more than 21,000 voters have already cast ballots. Neighboring Fort Bend County has logged more than 157,000 early votes.

Early voting runs through Friday, Oct. 30. Sites open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. each day this week. Registered Harris County voters are not tied to a neighborhood polling place during early voting and may use any of the county’s 75 early sites.

Sites are spread from downtown Houston to Baytown, Pasadena, Spring, Katy and Humble. The county offers an online map that lets voters look up locations by address or ZIP code, see estimated wait times and review a sample ballot before heading out.

Anyone who does not vote early can cast a ballot on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3. With the record pace, voters may want to check line lengths before choosing a site, especially at the busiest community centers. The opening day alone, with its 104,000-plus in-person voters, set the tone for what became a record-setting first week in the county.
