News Summary

As a tropical disturbance moves from Florida through Louisiana to Texas, Houston and Galveston prepare for heavy rainfall and scattered thunderstorms. The National Hurricane Center reports on increasing tropical moisture leading to record-setting rainfall, especially in Galveston. With significant flooding occurring on local roadways and flash flood warnings in effect, residents are urged to remain vigilant and avoid flooded areas.

Houston, TX & Galveston, TX Brace for Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms

Houston and Galveston are set to experience heavy rainfall and scattered thunderstorms as a tropical disturbance approaches from Florida through southeastern Louisiana into Texas. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Hurricane Center has identified a low-pressure system moving from southeastern Louisiana toward the central Gulf, with showers and thunderstorms predicted southwest of New Orleans.

While a separate low-pressure system over the Straits of Florida is also bringing scattered thunderstorms to that region, the National Weather Service has indicated that moisture from the approaching tropical system is expected to lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms in Southeast Texas. The potential for isolated and locally heavy rainfall exists, particularly east of Interstate 45 through Saturday morning.

Current Situation

Despite the disturbance that moved inland not developing into a tropical depression, its impact on the Southeast Texas region is significant. The National Hurricane Center has indicated a 0% chance of any further development at landfall. However, this system is expected to contribute to increased tropical moisture, leading to rainy and stormy conditions in the area.

The situation has escalated in Galveston, where record-setting rainfall was recorded. As of September 2, 2024, Galveston received 5.53 inches of rain by early afternoon, surpassing the previous record of 4.64 inches set in 1941. Consequently, significant flooding has occurred on local roadways, including Broadway Street and Stewart Road. Multiple flash flood warnings are in effect due to heavy rain and localized flooding throughout Southeast Texas.

Flash Flood Warnings and Flood Watches

Rainfall rates in some areas have reached up to 6 inches, particularly near Galveston Island and Beaumont-Port Arthur. Consequently, a flood watch is in effect for several counties in Southeast Texas, including Harris and Galveston. Forecasts indicate a potential for widespread street flooding as well as localized flooding of homes and businesses resulting from the continued rainfall.

Future Weather Outlook

Current weather patterns suggest that heavy rainfall will begin to lessen as atmospheric pressure associated with the disturbance subsides. Looking ahead, hot and dry weather is predicted from Sunday through at least the middle of the upcoming week. Although conditions may improve with a healthy chance of showers ongoing into the weekend, temperatures are expected to rise significantly next week.

Background Context

This weather event is a reminder of the volatility that tropical disturbances can bring as they move inland. While the current disturbance has not developed into a tropical depression, its moisture-laden clouds have still managed to create adverse weather conditions in the region. Local residents are urged to stay updated on weather reports and take necessary precautions as the situation with rainfall and flooding continues to develop.

As the system moves further inland, authorities remain vigilant, cautioning the public about the potential for flooding and unsafe driving conditions. Residents are encouraged to avoid flooded areas and to monitor local alerts for further updates.
