BORN on January 5, 1932, to Edgar Arthur and Bertha Mary Emmott, Jennie was a native and lifelong resident of Houston. She graduated from Reagan High School in 1949, where she was recognized as a drum majorette, showcasing her leadership qualities at a young age.
Throughout her life, Jennie displayed a wide range of talents and interests. She was an avid reader, a skilled seamstress and quilter, a dedicated gardener, and a certified floral designer. Her culinary skills made her the go-to kitchen chef for family gatherings, and her flair for party planning turned special occasions into lively celebrations that brought family and friends together.
Many in the community cherished her lively Mardi Gras parties and picturesque crawfish boils, which became a staple in her family’s social calendar. Jennie earned a reputation as an accomplished hostess whose events were characterized by warmth and joy.
In her professional life, Jennie spent decades as an executive secretary and administrator in the financial industry. She was a devoted member of the National Secretaries Association, taking on various roles and responsibilities to foster the organization. Additionally, she was an active participant in the Eastern Star, Bellaire Chapter and a long-time member of the Happy Hikers group, demonstrating her commitment to community engagement.
Her contributions to her church were equally notable. As a long-time member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Jennie served as the Chairman of Senior Saints, showcasing her dedication to serving and engaging with her spiritual community.
Travel was another passion for Jennie, who, alongside her husband Ronald A. Horton (known as Buck), explored many destinations both across the country and internationally. Notably, she coordinated a cherished family cruise to Cozumel, a highlight for many family members.
Family remained at the center of Jennie’s life. She had four children: Donalee M. Cushman, Charlotte L. Garcia, and Jennie Su Hall, alongside her late son Robert B. Horton. Jennie’s legacy continues through her ten grandchildren, including Robert A. Horton, Melissa D. Gustin, and Rachael M. Botthoff, as well as 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren—all of whom she cherished dearly.
Hailing from the “Greatest Generation,” Jennie experienced significant historical events such as the Great Depression and World War II. Her strong work ethic, appreciation for life, and deep faith shaped her values, and she lived her life in accordance with her beliefs, inspiring those around her with her million-dollar smile and sharp sense of humor.
In recognition of her life and contributions, pallbearers at her memorial included family members, while renowned bagpiper Dan Cole played during the service to honor her memory. The family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff of Compassus Hospice, Loving Hands, and Virginia’s Angels for their support during Jennie’s final days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to the charity of one’s choice.
