HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo 2 triumphed over North Texas SC with a commanding 3-0 victory in the final Texas Derby of the 2025 season on Sunday, July 13, at SaberCats Stadium. The impressive win allowed Houston to close the season series with North Texas with a 2-1-0 record, further solidifying their competitive edge in the derby history with a series record now standing at 3-6-3.
The match kicked off at 7 p.m. CT, with Houston Dynamo 2 taking an early lead. Forward Stephen Annor scored the first goal just 10 minutes into the game, assisted by Mattheo Dimareli’s curling free kick. Annor’s goal marked his fifth of the season.
Houston extended their lead in the 31st minute when Sebastian Rodriguez netted the second goal of the match, assisted by Lionel Gitau. Rodriguez’s goal was his third of the season. Finally, in the 51st minute, defender Juan Viveros sealed the victory with a header, assisted by Michael Halliday, bringing the score to 3-0.
North Texas SC was looking to clinch their own victory and even the all-time record at 2-2, having won the previous matchup 2-1, characterized by a late goal from Diego García. In this match, North Texas SC’s forward Sam Sarver, who recently made history as the fastest player in the club to score 10 goals in a single MLS NEXT Pro season, had an opportunity to make a significant impact but fell short.
Notably, Sarver missed a penalty in the 62nd minute, sending the ball over the crossbar. Despite several attempts, including solid performances from goalkeeper JT Harms, North Texas was unable to find the back of the net.
Prior to this decisive match, Houston Dynamo 2 entered with a record of 5-7-4, sitting in ninth place in the Western Conference, coming off a narrow 2-1 loss to Colorado Rapids 2. In comparison, a win for North Texas could have propelled them to third place in the conference standings.
The victory helped Houston Dynamo 2 improve their standing, showcasing the effectiveness of their attacking players, particularly Annor. Additionally, North Texas welcomed back midfielder Diego Garcia to the starting lineup after several matches out due to injury. This match also marked the season debut of defender Zach Molomo for North Texas SC in the 82nd minute.
Throughout the match, both teams donned black armbands to honor the victims of recent Central Texas floods. In recognition of this disaster, Houston Dynamo FC, alongside Austin FC and FC Dallas, announced a joint donation of $500,000 to support flood relief efforts in the region.
Houston Dynamo 2 continues their two-match homestand with another scheduled match against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Thursday, July 17. With a bolstered spirit from this triumph, they look to maintain their upward momentum in the ongoing season.
