Dramatic clouds over Houston signaling rain and flood risks

News Summary

Houston is anticipating significant rainfall and potential flash flooding on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The storms are expected to be slow-moving, creating a risk for prolonged heavy rainfall, particularly in low-lying areas. While most of Southeast Texas could see less than an inch of rain, isolated regions may experience up to 4 inches. Residents are advised to stay alert for changing water conditions as the flood watch extends into the nearby regions.

Houston Prepares for Heavy Rainfall and Potential Flash Flooding This Sunday

Houston is set to experience significant rainfall and potential flash flooding this Sunday, with storms expected to develop around 2 p.m. and remain active until 7 p.m.. Forecasts indicate that the storms will be slow-moving, which could lead to prolonged rainfall in certain areas and increase the risk of flash flooding.

According to meteorological reports, consistent southerly winds have brought high levels of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico into Southeast Texas, contributing to heightened humidity levels. Residents have been experiencing daily chances of scattered thunderstorms, but Sunday’s conditions are expected to escalate with heavier rainfall.

Morning weather on Sunday will be relatively calm, with less than 20% chance of rain before 10 a.m.. Morning low temperatures are forecasted to be in the upper 70s, accompanied by humidity levels around 90%. However, after 1 p.m., storm chances will increase as scattered storms develop along the coastal plains. High temperatures are expected to reach the low 90s, with heat index values approaching 100 degrees.

The best chance for rain in Houston is projected to occur between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., though rainfall will not be uniform across the region as the storms are expected to be scattered, leaving some areas dry. Overall, rain coverage across the Houston metropolitan area is anticipated to be around 50%.

Most of Southeast Texas is likely to receive less than 1 inch of rain, but isolated regions could experience up to 4 inches. This disparity has raised concerns regarding flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas. As the day progresses into evening, rain chances will diminish significantly due to the loss of daytime heating.

Looking Ahead: Monday, Tuesday, and Beyond

As the weather transitions into the following week, rain chances are forecasted to decrease significantly. On Monday, the chance of rain is estimated to be 30%, dropping further to 20% on Tuesday. Morning low temperatures will persist in the upper 70s, with afternoon highs reaching the low to mid-90s.

While flooding risks are expected to lower as many storms will be short-lived, a significant change in weather patterns is anticipated mid-week. By Wednesday and Thursday, rain chances are predicted to drop to around 10%, with mostly sunny skies on the horizon. High pressure systems are expected to suppress rainfall despite prevailing high moisture levels in the atmosphere.

By Friday and into the weekend, an atmospheric disturbance near the Gulf could reintroduce scattered thunderstorms back into the forecast.

Regional Flood Watch and Central Texas Conditions

A flood watch is currently in effect for Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio until 7 p.m. on Sunday. Severe flash flooding impacted Central Texas overnight, particularly in areas such as San Saba, Llano, and Lampasas, where many residents are expected to receive between 2-4 inches of rain, with isolated storms potentially delivering as much as 9-12 inches in already saturated regions. Rainfall in the Dallas/Fort Worth area is projected to be around 1-3 inches, with isolated storms potentially causing totals to soar up to 6 inches.

Residents are urged to keep a close watch on water levels, especially near creeks and bayous, as severe weather could lead to rapid changes in water conditions.
