Aerial view of the destruction caused by flooding in Central Texas
Central Texas is experiencing devastating flooding, leading to 82 confirmed deaths and many missing, especially in Kerr County. The flooding has impacted families and raised concerns about local disaster preparedness. Significant rainfall caused rapid water level rises, prompting extensive search and rescue operations with over 200 rescues conducted so far. Governor Greg Abbott has declared a disaster for several counties, and the community is banding together to support rescue efforts while facing unique challenges, including drones interfering with operations.
Central Texas is reeling from catastrophic flooding that has resulted in at least 82 confirmed deaths, with many victims hailing from the Houston area. The flooding began over the weekend and has prompted extensive search and rescue operations, particularly in Kerr County, where numerous individuals are still reported missing.
Among the deceased is Chloe Childress, a counselor at Camp Mystic, whose family has expressed profound heartbreak over her loss. Additionally, the Kinkaid School, where Childress was a recent graduate, acknowledged her passing and extended support to her grieving family. An 8-year-old girl, Mary Kathryn Jacobe, was also reported dead after her body was found on Sunday morning, with her cousin mourning her loss publicly online.
Jeff Wilson, a respected teacher at Kingwood Park High School with over three decades of experience, was among those killed. His wife, Amber, and son, Shiloh, are currently reported missing. The tragic effects of the flooding are particularly pronounced in Kerr County, where the death toll stands at 68, including at least 27 campers and counselors from Camp Mystic. A total of 10 girls from the camp remain unaccounted for, with four Houston-area girls identified as missing: Kellyanne Lytal, Molly Dewitt, Greta Toranzo, and Margaret Sheedy.
In addition to these individuals, John Burgess and Julia Anderson Burgess have been located safely, although their two sons are still unaccounted for. Reese Manchaca is another person reported missing along with three friends: Ella Cahill, Aidan Heartfield, and Joyce Badon. Local officials, including Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough, have highlighted the intensive search efforts aimed at locating missing residents.
Significant rainfall, with totals reaching up to 21 inches in some areas, led to the rapid rise of water levels and subsequent flooding. Over 200 rescues, many conducted by helicopter, have been carried out since the onset of these severe weather conditions. In response to the tragic events, Camp Mystic expressed its grief over the loss of 27 campers and counselors.
In light of the flooding, local authorities have urged residents to evacuate areas near rivers and creeks and to avoid driving through high water. The severe weather incidents have raised concerns about local preparedness for such natural disasters, particularly regarding the absence of an effective siren system to provide timely warnings to residents.
The flooding has been described as a “one-in-100-years” rainfall event for Central Texas. Flash flood emergencies were issued in advance of the storms, providing some prior warning. Governor Greg Abbott has since declared a disaster for several counties affected by flooding, enabling access to essential resources for recovery efforts.
Efforts are additionally hampered by drones interfering with rescue missions, prompting officials to issue warnings against flying them in the area. Despite these challenges, the community has demonstrated remarkable resilience, with volunteers and first responders tirelessly working under difficult conditions to aid those in need.
As search and rescue operations continue, Texas officials remain focused on locating those still unaccounted for, with an ongoing commitment to support recovery and relief efforts in the wake of this devastating flooding.
