Houston – John Scott, a highly respected attorney and beloved family man, passed away on July 1, 2025, after bravely battling health issues for four years. He was 72 years old and is survived by his wife, Kathy, their three children, and six grandchildren.

Born in Beaumont, Texas, John experienced life as a first-generation American, proudly embracing his Irish heritage. He grew up in a tight-knit family and focused on his education, attending Beaumont St. Anne Catholic School and Forest Park High School. Standing out as an athlete, he lettered in basketball and later pursued higher education at the University of Texas, where he was an active member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, displaying a lifelong passion for UT football.

John’s legal journey began in 1974 when he started studying law at South Texas College of Law. He later graduated Cum Laude from the University of Houston College of Law. During his time in law school, he was a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity and the Order of The Barons. He initiated his legal career at Andrews & Kurth in Houston, where he established lasting friendships and created a reputable professional network.

In 1993, John co-founded Cruse, Scott, Henderson & Allen, a specialty litigation firm that further solidified his standing in the legal community. He concluded his impressive career at Scott, Clawater & Houston, retiring in 2021. His dedication to law was recognized through multiple accolades, including being named a Super Lawyer and receiving Board Certification in Personal Injury Law. He was also admitted to practice in numerous federal and state courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and was honored as a Fellow of the Texas and Houston Bar Associations.

John was also known for his deep love of golf, despite never achieving a hole-in-one. He was a long-time member of the Houston Country Club, where he served on the Board of Directors and enjoyed camaraderie with friends. In recent years, he treasured moments with the “Johnny’s Good Time Lunch Bunch,” a close group he spent time with during his health challenges.

John’s personal life was richly fulfilling. He met his wife, Kathy, on a blind date in the fall of 1975, which blossomed into a remarkable 50-year love story. Together, they graduated from UT and raised their family in Houston, instilling love and values in their three children—Elyse, Molly, and Patrick. John embraced the role of a doting grandfather, affectionately called “Buff” by his six grandchildren, and cherished every moment spent with family at the dinner table, filled with stories and laughter.

Known for his calm demeanor, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family, John carried a strong faith throughout his life that provided him with strength during his illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, May and Jack Scott, a brother, and several in-laws, leaving behind a legacy of love and integrity.

In a statement, the Scott family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the medical professionals, caregivers, and friends who supported them throughout John’s illness. A visitation for John Scott will be held on July 9, followed by a funeral service on July 10 at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston.
