Attendees at Dream Con 2025 celebrating creativity and community.
The inaugural Dream Con in Houston attracted large crowds and generated $19.2 million in economic impact, showcasing a record-breaking attendance. With notable guests and a focus on Black voices in fandom, the event celebrated inclusion and community engagement. Dream Con’s popularity continues to grow, marking a significant moment for fan conventions and the representation of Black culture within the entertainment industry.
The first Dream Con held in Houston from May 30 to June 1, 2025, marked a notable milestone for the event, generating an impressive $19.2 million in economic impact. The convention took place at the George R. Brown Convention Center, drawing large crowds and emphasizing the growing popularity of the dream-con-2025-attribute-given convention.
This year’s Dream Con reported a total of 32,674 hard ticket sales, reflecting a remarkable increase of 64.6% compared to the previous year held in Austin, which had 19,853 hard ticket sales. This surge in attendance demonstrates the event’s expanding appeal and the growing interest in the celebration of fandom.
A standout feature of Dream Con 2025 was the appearance of Megan Thee Stallion, a three-time Grammy-winning artist. She hosted a “fireside chat” focusing on her entrepreneurial journey and career while also emceeing a cosplay contest. Her tequila brand, Chicas Divertidas, served as the event’s official tequila sponsor, further contributing to the event’s lively atmosphere.
Dream Con showcases the tapestry of fandom through a Black perspective, celebrating the contributions of Black fans and creators in various entertainment forms. The convention prioritizes inclusivity, providing a platform for marginalized voices within the fandom community. This year’s event included key guests such as Cedric Yarbrough, Twitch streamer Dontai, and author Tony Weaver, enhancing its lineup of speakers and participants.
Attendees expressed appreciation for the significance of having a major gathering centered around Black nerd culture. Dream Con is recognized for its distinctive approach to fan conventions, incorporating unique events that engage the community, such as charity basketball games and open mic opportunities. The convention has a history of emphasizing Black representation and creativity within gaming, anime, and other entertainment genres.
Founded by RDCWorld in 2018, Dream Con began in Waco and has since moved around Texas, adapting to the increasing attendance and demand. Given its past sellouts and the cap on attendance to manage growth, this year’s event signifies a cultural reset and transformative opportunity for the fan community in Houston. As the convention continues to evolve and expand, it remains dedicated to showcasing the diversity and richness of fandom culture.
Dream Con 2025 has positioned itself as a pivotal event, not just in Houston but in the broader spectrum of fan conventions. Its focus on celebration, inclusion, and community engagement highlights the vital role of Black voices in shaping the future of fandom culture. With its success this year, Dream Con is likely to further cement its reputation and standing in the convention circuit in years to come.
