A Houston family is fighting for justice after discovering their home was allegedly stolen through forged documents. They found that the deed was fraudulently transferred to another party without their consent. Despite a court ruling ordering the alleged thief to pay them, they have yet to receive compensation, prompting concerns about accountability and justice. Another family has come forward with similar claims against the same individual, highlighting a growing issue of deed fraud in the area. Both families emphasize the emotional toll and demand for systemic change to protect property rights.
A Houston family is demanding justice following a troubling incident where their family home was allegedly stolen through forged documents. The case centers on a deed forgery lawsuit involving businessman Jerry Gurley and the home located in Acres Homes, which holds significant sentimental value for the family.
Vanessa Voldbakken, along with her siblings, became aware of the situation when they found out that the deed to their home was fraudulently transferred to another party without their consent. In 2019, the family had rejected Gurley’s offer to purchase the property, believing the matter to be settled. The shocking discovery of the forged deed has left the family devastated, as the house marks their childhood memories—Voldbakken has pointed out that she learned to walk in that home.
The family took legal action against Gurley, culminating in a settlement agreement reached in April 2025. A judge subsequently approved the settlement in May, ordering Gurley to pay the family $200,000 along with over $87,000 in accrued interest. However, the Voldbakken siblings have not received any payment, as the deadline set for Gurley has already lapsed by 30 days. This has intensified their demand for accountability and justice.
Gurley’s attorney, Chris Di Ferrante, has not commented on the payment situation, alleging that the family’s attorney, Jacob Scholl, has breached confidentiality. Meanwhile, the Voldbakken family has filed a police report in hopes of prompting a criminal investigation into Gurley’s actions. They are advocating for him to face prosecution for the alleged deed fraud, highlighting the emotional damage caused by the situation.
As the circumstances develop, the family’s concerns regarding Gurley’s financial accountability have increased. Scholl expressed fears that Gurley might be judgment-proof, meaning that even if the family wins their case, they might not receive the compensation owed to them. The judgement against Gurley will continue to accrue interest at a rate of 7.5% per year until it is settled.
In a related matter, another family—led by the Kelley family—has come forward claiming to be victims of similar fraudulent activities perpetrated by Gurley. During a press conference, they revealed that their family home, which was inherited in 2017, was sold without their consent and eventually demolished. They have also filed a police report, seeking accountability for the loss of their home and priceless family heirlooms.
Currently, the Kelley family claims that the total amount they are owed, including interest, has reached $280,000. They and their attorney have accused Patriot Title Company of facilitating fraudulent real estate transactions, asserting that their involvement enabled Gurley’s fraudulent activities to succeed.
Both the Voldbakken and Kelley families have voiced their outrage over what they regard as a lack of financial accountability for Gurley’s actions. Their experiences reflect a growing concern surrounding deed fraud and the ease with which homes can be stolen through forgery. They are determined that justice be served and for those responsible to face the legal consequences of their actions, emphasizing the need for systemic change to protect property rights.
