A 55-year-old man from Houston has died after a drowning incident while boogie boarding in Galveston on March 16, 2025. The incident occurred near 31st Street and Seawall Boulevard, marking it as the fourth drowning case on Galveston beaches this month.
The man was boogie boarding with his wife when they decided to return to shore due to fatigue. Upon realizing her husband was missing, she called 911 at approximately 8:35 a.m. to report him lost. Following the emergency call, multiple agencies responded promptly, including the Galveston Island Beach Patrol, Galveston Fire Department, Galveston Police Department, Galveston EMS, and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Rescue teams began searching the waters and, around 9:09 a.m., located him on the west side of Tower 24, close to the head of a jetty. After being brought to shore, rescuers initiated CPR before transporting him to the University of Texas Medical Branch. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at 9:49 a.m..
This incident marks a concerning trend as it is the fourth drowning on Galveston beaches since the start of May. Previous drownings included a 17-year-old boy who lost his life on June 10, a 25-year-old woman from Houston who drowned while swimming with friends last month, and an Oregon man who drowned on May 4 after entering a ‘no swimming’ area.
Reports indicate escalating risks associated with water activities in Galveston, highlighting the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and being aware of beach conditions. In light of these recent tragedies, families and individuals are reminded to exercise caution while engaging in water sports. Authorities emphasize the need to stay within designated swimming areas, be mindful of strong currents, and always keep an eye on fellow swimmers.
As the summer season approaches, local agencies are expected to ramp up their safety campaigns and patrol efforts to help prevent further incidents. Beachgoers are encouraged to remain vigilant when enjoying the waters, recognizing that the ocean can pose unpredictable dangers.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of water safety, particularly in popular beach areas known for their recreational activities. Community members and visitors alike must prioritize safety measures to ensure a secure environment for everyone enjoying Galveston’s coastline.
