News Summary

Houston’s METRO Authority will follow a regular weekday schedule for public transportation services on Juneteenth, ensuring accessibility for travelers and community events. The revised schedule supports increased travel demands as the city celebrates this significant holiday, which honors the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. METRO emphasizes its commitment to reliable transportation while recognizing the cultural importance of Juneteenth. Passengers relying on METROLift services should make reservations in advance, while high-occupancy vehicle lanes will remain accessible throughout the day.

Houston Prepared for Adjusted METRO Services on Juneteenth

Houston’s public transportation authority, METRO, has announced an adjusted service schedule for the Juneteenth holiday on Thursday, June 19, 2025. As the nation observes this significant day, METRO will operate local bus, METRORail, Park & Ride, and curb2curb services on a regular weekday schedule to accommodate travelers and community activities.

The METRO HOV/HOT lanes will remain open throughout the day, ensuring accessibility for those utilizing high-occupancy vehicle lanes. The METRO customer service center will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for passenger inquiries and assistance, though all RideStores and the lost and found will be closed in observance of the holiday. It is important for passengers relying on METROLift services to be aware that the METROLift customer service and reservations offices will also not be operational on this day.

Passengers who require METROLift services are advised to call the reservation line a day prior, specifically on Wednesday, June 18, to schedule their trips for both June 19 and 20. However, subscription rides scheduled for Thursday will not be affected and will continue as usual.

Background on Juneteenth

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the date when enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom, marking an essential milestone in the United States’ long history of slavery and civil rights. In June 2021, Juneteenth was designated as a federal holiday, reflecting the nation’s acknowledgment of the significance of this day in the fight for freedom and racial justice. METRO’s decision to adjust its service reflects this recognition and aims to facilitate the participation of community members in various Juneteenth celebrations and events across Houston.

Community Impact

The shift to a regular weekday schedule is intended to support the increased travel demands typically seen during the holiday. Events and celebrations held in honor of Juneteenth attract local residents and visitors, promoting awareness and understanding of African American history. METRO’s adjusted services aim to enhance accessibility, allowing individuals to travel to various festivities without concern for changed transit schedules.

By continuing regular operations for the public transit system, METRO demonstrates its commitment to providing reliable transportation options while honoring the cultural significance of the day. The community is encouraged to take advantage of these services and participate in local Juneteenth events, fostering a spirit of togetherness and recognition of shared history.

The adjusted schedule information was released by METRO and reflects the agency’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and support during important cultural observances.
