Houston will celebrate Juneteenth on June 19, 2023, with a series of events that honor the end of slavery in the United States, specifically commemorating the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom. This day marks one of the most significant milestones in American history, symbolizing the liberation of Black Americans two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued and following the conclusion of the Civil War.
The celebrations will include a world premiere piece at Emancipation Park from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. This performance features a collaboration between composer Joel Thompson and poet Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton, showcasing the voices of marginalized communities within classical music. Renowned artists soprano Nicole Heaston and baritone Justin Austin will perform alongside pianist Donald Lee Il, with a pre-performance panel moderated by journalist Linda Lorelle to enhance discussions on cultural narratives.
At HCC Central Campus, a screening of the documentary “Juneteenth 1865-2025: Kinfolk Family” will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. This event will also feature a Q&A session with creators Mia Gradney and Len Cannon, providing attendees with insights into the film’s themes and their relevance today.
The Obsidi BNXT Executive Forum for Black tech professionals will be conducted at NRG Center from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can participate in strategic networking activities and engage in leadership discussions aimed at empowering the Black tech community.
At Sam Houston Park, the Heritage Society will offer guided Black history tours throughout the day, themed around traditional teacakes and red punch, with sessions at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.

For those seeking wellness activities, POST Houston will run a wellness celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where participants can enjoy yoga, various dance sessions, and refreshing cold-pressed juices.
Another highlight is the performance titled “From Plantation to Emancipation,” presented by actress Kijana Wiseman at Sam Houston Park from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., which illustrates the historical journey from enslavement to freedom.
The Juneteenth 160 Fest at the Houston Freedmen’s Town Conservancy Visitor’s Center will occur from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., featuring workshops, live DJs, a talent show, and opportunities to support local vendors. Meanwhile, a unique bar crawl called “Juneteenth on Almeda” is scheduled from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., celebrating Black culture across historic bars along Almeda Rd.
A cultural celebration in Galveston will also be geared towards commemorating Juneteenth, running from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., with a showcase of art, music, and discussions about the holiday’s significance. Additionally, an event at Neiman Marcus called Elegant Eats En Ebene will promote culinary experiences aimed at health equity from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The Juneteenth Juke Jam celebration at Henke & Pillot from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. will close the day by focusing on Black excellence and creativity. An art exhibition titled “Terms & Conditions; The Promise vs. Reality” will also open at the University Museum at Texas Southern University from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., highlighting Black liberation and the contributions of the United States Colored Troops.
