Severe thunderstorms approaching Southeast Texas, bringing rain and potential flooding.
Southeast Texas residents are advised to prepare for severe thunderstorms and potential flooding risks on Wednesday, as widespread rain is expected throughout the day. The KHOU 11 Weather Team has issued a Weather Impact Alert for the region, predicting damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. Authorities emphasize safety precautions, especially for driving, as flooding may occur. The threat is expected to peak between mid-afternoon and early evening, leading to challenging commute conditions. Residents are urged to stay updated and monitor weather alerts for their safety.
Southeast Texas residents should prepare for severe thunderstorms and potential flooding on Wednesday, as widespread showers are expected to affect the region throughout the day. Rain will likely begin mid to late morning and continue into the late afternoon, posing risks for damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.
The KHOU 11 Weather Team has issued a Weather Impact Alert that will come into effect after 11 a.m. The highest risk for severe weather is predicted to occur between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. During this time, temperatures are forecasted to reach around 88°F by midday, setting the stage for powerful thunderstorms.
As the day progresses, scattered thunderstorms will develop, coinciding with the afternoon commute. Some storms may reach severe levels, creating hazardous driving conditions. Evening storms could persist into the early nighttime hours, further complicating travel plans for residents.
A Level 2 out of 5, classified as a Slight Risk for severe weather, has been assigned for much of Southeast Texas. This warning includes major areas such as Houston, Sugar Land, Tomball, Conroe, Liberty, and El Campo. The region is under an elevated risk for damaging wind gusts as well as the potential for isolated tornadoes during the afternoon and evening hours.
Additionally, the Houston metro area faces a slight risk for flooding, while zones further north and west—such as Brenham, Huntsville, and Austin—are experiencing moderate flood risks. Heavy rainfall expected from thunderstorms could lead to street flooding and the accumulation of water in low-lying areas, which are already vulnerable due to prior saturation.
Residents can anticipate a mostly dry morning before the first round of storms moves in between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., as previously mentioned. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to continue through early evening, and additional storms may make a return early Thursday morning along the coast, gradually spreading inland during the morning commute. Conditions may remain unsettled, with full clearing not expected until later Thursday.
Authorities emphasize the importance of safety during severe weather conditions. Residents are advised to avoid driving through flooded roads, as even shallow flooding can pose significant dangers. Various counties serviced by the weather team include Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Brazoria, Galveston, Liberty, Walker, Waller, Polk, Chambers, Wharton, Washington, Matagorda, Grimes, Austin, Colorado, and Trinity.
As Southeast Texas braces for the potential impacts of severe thunderstorms and flooding, residents are encouraged to stay alert, monitor weather updates, and plan accordingly. The community’s safety is paramount, and proactive measures can mitigate risks associated with severe weather.
