Burnt Bean Co. Crowned Texas’ Top Barbecue Joint

News Summary

Burnt Bean Co. in Seguin has been named the best barbecue joint in Texas Monthly’s latest list of the 50 Best Barbecue Joints in Texas, rising from No. 4 in 2021. This list includes notable shifts among various establishments, with new rankings emphasizing Texas’s evolving barbecue scene. The top 10 showcased the growing prominence of barbecue excellence, particularly with the involvement of several restaurants in the upcoming Michelin Guide award ceremony, highlighting the rich culinary traditions of Texas.

Seguin has earned a prestigious title as Burnt Bean Co. was named the top barbecue joint in Texas Monthly’s newly published list of the 50 Best Barbecue Joints in Texas. Released on May 27, 2025, this ranking marks a notable rise for Burnt Bean Co., which had previously held the No. 4 position in the 2021 list.

In this latest ranking, Burnt Bean Co. clinches the top spot, showcasing its skill in delivering exceptional barbecue. The list ranks the top barbecue joints as follows:

  1. Burnt Bean Co. (Seguin)
  2. LeRoy and Lewis Barbecue (Austin)
  3. Goldee’s Barbecue (Fort Worth)
  4. Redbird BBQ (Port Neches)
  5. GW’s BBQ (San Juan)
  6. InterStellar BBQ (Austin)
  7. Dayne’s Craft Barbecue (Aledo)
  8. LaVaca BBQ (Port Lavaca)
  9. Truth BBQ (Houston)
  10. Evie Mae’s Pit Barbeque (Wolfforth)

The new list features four newcomers in the top 10, reflecting the evolving landscape of barbecue in Texas. The rankings are part of Texas Monthly’s quadrennial assessment of barbecue joints, which involved visiting a total of 319 restaurants. Over 100 of these establishments were evaluated personally by barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn.

In comparing the new rankings with those from 2021, several shifts are notable. LeRoy & Lewis Barbecue has advanced from No. 5 to No. 2, while Goldee’s Barbecue, once ranked No. 1, has slipped to the third position. Meanwhile, Truth BBQ and Evie Mae’s Pit Barbeque have maintained their top 10 positions since the list’s inception in 2017.

The rankings also reveal that both Snow’s BBQ and Franklin Barbecue, revered establishments in the barbecue community, have fallen out of the top 10 for the first time, landing in the second 40 list. Additionally, Cattleack Barbecue and Panther City BBQ, previous mainstays of the top 10, remain in the top 50 but are no longer in the prestigious top tier.

Among the top 10, LeRoy & Lewis and InterStellar are notable for being the only barbecue establishments to have received a Michelin star. This highlights a growing recognition for barbecue excellence on an international scale. In particular, Houston’s presence in the rankings has diminished since 2021, with only three returning venues: Truth, CorkScrew BBQ, and Pinkerton’s BBQ.

Further highlighting the importance of Texas barbecue culture, seven selected restaurants are slated to participate in the upcoming Michelin Guide award ceremony on November 11, 2025. This attendance signifies a cultivation of Texas’s culinary heritage, particularly its barbecue scene. Burnt Bean Co. itself also receives a significant nod in the form of a Bib Gourmand Award from the inaugural Michelin Guide Texas selection, underlining the quality and craftsmanship found in their offerings.

With these accolades and recent recognition, Burnt Bean Co. and the other top-ranked establishments signal not only a celebration of barbecue but also a reflection of the rich culinary traditions that define Texas.
