Fans in the Toyota Center during the NCAA tournament

News Summary

The University of Houston is discussing the possibility of relinquishing its hosting duties for the 2026 NCAA South Regional tournament. This change could enable the university’s team to compete locally at the Toyota Center. Athletic director Eddie Nuñez emphasized the opportunity this presents for the team to reach the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. The university is exploring NCAA regulations and potential replacement candidates, while looking ahead to another strong basketball season.

Houston – The University of Houston (UH) is currently in discussions with the NCAA regarding the potential relinquishment of its hosting duties for the 2026 NCAA South Regional tournament, scheduled to be held at the Toyota Center. By giving up its role as the host, UH could become eligible to compete locally in the tournament, approximately three miles from its campus.

The university’s athletic director, Eddie Nuñez, noted that by stepping down as host, the school would have the opportunity to participate in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight rounds at the Toyota Center. Despite UH being designated as the host school, Nuñez is not ruling out the possibility of the team playing at the venue during the regional tournament.

Since Toyota Center’s selection as a regional host site in a joint bid with the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority back in 2020, UH has gone through changes in its hosting plans. Previously, the school was set to host an NCAA regional in 2020; however, this event was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. An NCAA spokesperson has confirmed that host institutions are prohibited from playing at their venue during the regional tournament.

For UH to play at the Toyota Center during the tournament, it must comply with specific NCAA regulations, which include not having more than three regular-season games scheduled at the arena in the season leading up to the regional. Nuñez is actively seeking clarification from the NCAA on this matter before moving forward with discussions on potential candidates who could take over the hosting responsibilities.

In terms of replacements for the hosting duties, other Division I schools in the Houston area, such as Rice, Texas Southern, Houston Christian, Prairie View A&M, Lamar, and Sam Houston are seen as probable candidates. It is important to note that the Big 12 Conference is not expected to have any involvement as a hosting option for the tournament.

Looking ahead to the 2026 tournament, UH is coming off a successful season where it reached the national championship game. The university is projected to return several key starters and boasts the top-ranked signing class, which could position them as significant contenders for the preseason No. 1 ranking. Notably, UH has achieved a No. 1 seed for three consecutive years and will likely need to maintain that status to secure placement in the South Regional.

The South Regional is scheduled for March 26-28, 2026, with additional regional sites including the SAP Center in San Jose (West), the United Center in Chicago (Midwest), and Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. (East). The culmination of the tournament will lead to the Final Four, set to take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis from April 4-6, 2026.
