Both individuals required medical attention, and the sergeant is expected to recover. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities seeking witnesses to provide additional information.

Houston Police Officer-Involved Shooting Leaves Suspect Hospitalized and Sergeant Injured

Houston, TX – An officer-involved shooting near the Galleria Mall on Westheimer Road resulted in one suspect being hospitalized with serious injuries, and a police sergeant suffering injuries during the incident. Police responded to a shooting call at approximately 5:21 p.m. on a day that began with police officers working off-duty security jobs in the area.

The shooting occurred around 4:40 p.m. when Houston Police Department (HPD) officers identified a vehicle believed to be related to a reported robbery incident, commonly referred to as “jugging,” that had taken place the previous day. The suspect, a black male, drove the vehicle out of private property and onto the wrong side of Westheimer Road.

According to reports, the HPD sergeant issued verbal commands to the suspect before discharging his service weapon multiple times, striking the individual. Following the shooting, the suspect’s vehicle continued across Westheimer Road until it came to a stop, where officers quickly detained him and provided medical assistance.

The injured suspect was then transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Meanwhile, the police sergeant, a veteran of HPD with over 25 years of service, also required medical attention and has been sent to a nearby hospital. Authorities have stated that the sergeant is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries.

Incident Details and Investigations

Initially, the shooting was classified as an “assist the officer” call, indicating the level of urgency for police response to the situation. The HPD has confirmed that the sergeant involved in the incident will be placed on administrative duty while the investigation is ongoing. Following standard departmental procedure, body-worn camera footage from the sergeant will be made available within 30 days to aid in further understanding the incident.

In the aftermath, Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir has urged any witnesses to the shootingincident or those who may possess video footage to come forward and contact the HPD Homicide Division. The department is seeking additional information to help clarify the details surrounding the events leading to the shooting, as well as to confirm the charges that may be filed against the suspect.

Background Context

Jugging is a type of robbery that typically involves suspects targeting individuals who have just withdrawn cash from ATMs and following them to steal their money. The rise in such incidents has led law enforcement agencies, including the HPD, to adopt more proactive measures in addressing these types of crimes, which can sometimes escalate to dangerous situations.

The shooting near the Galleria Mall highlights the inherent risks police officers face while conducting off-duty security work, as they can become involved in various criminal activities unfolding in their vicinity. The department continues to maintain a commitment to safety and accountability, particularly in the wake of incidents involving use of force.

While details regarding the precise nature of the injuries sustained by both the suspect and the sergeant have yet to be released, the situation remains under investigation by the Houston Police Department. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as new information becomes available.
