Houston police respond to a traffic stop incident in the northeast area.
A Houston police officer was injured during a traffic stop when struck by a vehicle. In a separate incident, officers shot dead a suspect following a crash. The investigation into both occurrences is ongoing as law enforcement navigates complex challenges in the area.
HOUSTON – A Houston police officer was injured early this morning during a traffic stop in northeast Houston when he was struck by a vehicle. The incident took place around 1:19 a.m. on Maxey Road in the 600 block while the officer was engaging with another driver during a routine stop.
At the time of the incident, the officer observed a car speeding along the shoulder of the road. As a precautionary measure to avoid being hit, he jumped into his patrol cruiser. Unfortunately, his vehicle was struck, resulting in a leg injury that required him to be transported to a local hospital. Authorities suspect the driver responsible for hitting the officer may have been intoxicated, and an investigation is currently underway.
In an unrelated incident occurring later the same day, a man was shot and killed by officers following a vehicle crash on the North Freeway just after 4 p.m. The event transpired in the 10700 block of the freeway, where police responded to a two-vehicle accident. Witnesses reported that a green SUV had cut off other vehicles, leading to the collision.
After the crash, responding officers relocated the involved drivers to a safer area while they conducted their investigation. During the process, officers located the green SUV described by witnesses parked in a nearby lot. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers noticed that the man inside appeared to be intoxicated and was brandishing a weapon.
In response to the threat, at least one officer discharged their firearm, striking the man who later succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Fortunately, no officers were injured during this incident. The Houston Police Department has indicated that body camera footage of the encounter will be reviewed and made available within 30 days, in accordance with department policy.
This series of events follows another incident on Thursday, where the Houston Police Department pursued a vehicle involved in a robbery. That pursuit ended in a crash that resulted in injuries to both the officers involved and the suspects. The suspect vehicle flipped over after hitting a parked truck, while officers inadvertently crashed into two other parked vehicles nearby during the incident.
Emergency services transported both injured officers and the suspects to local hospitals. Fortunately, no additional injuries were reported beyond those involved in the crash. Before the situation escalated into a crash, officers had attempted a tactical maneuver commonly known as a PIT (Precision Intervention Technique) to safely halt the fleeing vehicle.
These incidents highlight the growing challenges faced by law enforcement in the Houston area, as officers navigate potential dangers during routine traffic stops and vehicle pursuits. The investigations into both events are ongoing, and updates may follow as more information becomes available.
