Central Texas landscape during record-breaking heatwave.
Central Texas is anticipating extreme heat this week, with temperatures potentially soaring to 100 degrees in cities like San Antonio and Austin. Houston may avoid triple digits but will still endure high temperatures. The early arrival of such heat raises concerns about heat-related illnesses, especially as Houston might see its first 100-degree day as early as Thursday. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions. With temperatures exceeding those of the Sahara Desert possible in some areas, staying hydrated and limiting outdoor activities are critical as conditions evolve.
Central Texas is bracing for record-breaking heat this week, with temperatures expected to climb to 100 degrees or higher. Major cities such as San Antonio and Austin are in the path of this extreme weather, while Houston is likely to avoid crossing the triple-digit threshold but can expect very high temperatures nonetheless.
Forecasts indicate that daily high-temperature records could be broken or matched from Tuesday through at least Friday or Saturday. In Houston, the temperature is projected to soar into the 90s, with a peak of 94 degrees on Tuesday, threatening to tie a record set in 1907. The following day, Wednesday, could see a high of 97 degrees, shattering the existing record of 93 degrees established in 2018. Similarly, Thursday is anticipated to match this with another high of 97 degrees, breaking the previous high of 94 degrees. By Friday, temperatures are projected to reach 96 degrees, exceeding the 94 degrees record from 2022.
In this scorching heat, low temperatures will remain balmy, beginning in the upper 60s on Tuesday and rising to the mid-70s by Wednesday, continuing through Saturday. With the afternoon heat index values expected to hit between 100 to 103 degrees, conditions will feel hotter than the actual air temperatures.
This year could potentially mark an early record for Houston, which typically does not experience 95-degree temperatures until June 13. Predictions suggest that Houston could see its first 100-degree temperature of 2025 as early as Wednesday or Thursday. If the Bush Intercontinental Airport reaches 100 degrees during this period, it would set a new record for the earliest occurrence, breaking the previous record of June 2, 2011.
While the likelihood of reaching triple-digit temperatures in Houston is considered low compared to cities like San Antonio and Laredo, where highs could reach a blistering 110 degrees, the heat still presents significant challenges. Early-season heat brings heightened risks for heat-related illnesses, as residents have not yet acclimated to such extreme conditions. As a precaution, Heat Advisories or Extreme Heat Warnings are anticipated for Wednesday and Thursday.
Austin, where the average first 100-degree day typically occurs around July 11, may see temperatures hitting 100 degrees as early as Tuesday. On Wednesday, projections suggest it might become the hottest day, potentially challenging May’s all-time heat record of 104 degrees from 1925. The impending heat wave is raising safety concerns, particularly regarding the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
There is also the possibility that some regions in South Texas could experience temperatures that exceed those in the Sahara Desert. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions and limit their exposure to the intense heat as conditions continue to evolve through the week.
