Kevin Malloy, senior vice president of Penske Truck Rental, emphasized that movers in 2024 exhibited a clear motivation for relocating. In addition to its ranking by Penske, Houston emerged as the most searched U.S. city for domestic relocation in a 2025 study by Jobseeker. The analysis revealed that affordability and a robust job market were significant factors contributing to Houston’s desirability. Comparatively, the cost of living in Houston is approximately 48.5% lower than in New York City, which ranks second in moving destinations. The absence of a state income tax in Texas further enhances Houston’s attractiveness for those considering relocation.
A wide range of individuals seeking new opportunities are choosing Houston, with the city being particularly popular among residents from larger urban areas such as Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Jacksonville, and even San Antonio. In a separate report by U-Haul, Houston ranked as the No. 9 metropolitan area for movers in 2024, significantly improving from its No. 16 position in 2023.
