Washington D.C. – Tilman Fertitta, a billionaire restaurateur and owner of the Houston Rockets, has been officially confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the U.S. Ambassador to Italy and San Marino. The confirmation took place on April 29, 2025, with a significant supporting vote of 83-14.

Fertitta, whose extensive business portfolio includes over 600 restaurants and various enterprises, will fulfill what he has described as “the most important job of my life.” During the confirmation process, Fertitta outlined his primary objectives as ambassador, which include increasing Italy’s engagement in the Western Balkans to counteract Russian aggression and enhancing trade relations between the United States and Italy.

In preparation for his new diplomatic role, Fertitta formulated a comprehensive divestment plan. Submitted to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics in March, the plan promises that he will resign from most of his business interests after his confirmation. This includes well-known chains such as Landry’s, Morton’s the Steakhouse, and Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, among others.

Alongside his plans to divest from numerous businesses, Fertitta intends to resign from several organizational roles, including his position on the Rainforest Cafe Friends of the Future Foundation and as chairman of the University of Houston System Board of Regents. However, he will maintain unpaid roles with the Houston Children’s Charity and the Houston Police Foundation, while he will retain ownership of the Houston Rockets, which has been deemed free of conflict of interest by the Office of Government Ethics.

Fertitta’s confirmation garnered praise from various senators, including John Cornyn from Texas, who acknowledged his successful business endeavors and philanthropic efforts. Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona also expressed gratitude for Fertitta’s personal support during challenging family situations, further bolstering his reputation as a dedicated leader and problem solver.

In his personal remarks, Fertitta has highlighted his Italian heritage, noting his Sicilian descent and deep admiration for Italian culture, cultivated through numerous visits to the country. His connection to Italy is expected to play a significant role in his diplomatic efforts at enhancing U.S.-Italy relations.

Fertitta’s journey in the business world began in 1986 with a single restaurant and has since evolved into a multi-faceted empire, establishing him as one of the richest individuals in Houston. Along with his vast business accomplishments, he has also been known for his political affiliations, having previously supported former President Donald Trump and contributed to various political campaigns.

This new appointment marks a significant transition from business to public service for Fertitta, who must now navigate the complexities of diplomatic relations while representing U.S. interests in Italy and San Marino. Stakeholders and observers will be closely watching how his extensive business background informs his approach to international relations and trade.
