Mailon Almendares-Martinez, a 21-year-old from New Orleans, was convicted for his role in a human smuggling operation transporting undocumented immigrants from Texas to Houston. The trial revealed he coordinated logistics via WhatsApp and employed associates for payments. The operation faced violence from rival smugglers, resulting in injuries to two migrants. Almendares-Martinez was taken into custody after the verdict, as several other associates have also pleaded guilty, indicating a larger smuggling network. Sentencing is scheduled for August 11, 2023.
New Orleans – Mailon Almendares-Martinez, a 21-year-old man, has been found guilty in a human smuggling operation extending from Texas to Houston. The conviction, which came after a three-day trial, involved charges of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens. The jury reached its decision in less than an hour, highlighting the strength of the evidence presented.
The smuggling operation took place over a short period from October 30 to November 2, 2022. Almendares-Martinez was involved in transporting migrants from the South Texas border to Houston, coordinating the logistics through communications made primarily via WhatsApp messages and phone calls. He reportedly employed associates, promising them between $1,000 and $2,000 for each migrant they helped transport.
During the operation, the group encountered violent resistance when their vehicle was shot at by members of a rival smuggling organization. In the incident, two migrants sustained injuries; one was shot in the arm, while another was hit in the leg. Notably, one of the injured individuals was a Honduran national who had recently crossed the Rio Grande into the United States. Despite the severity of their injuries, Almendares-Martinez chose not to seek medical assistance for the affected individuals and instead advised the group to continue toward their intended destination in Houston.
The group of migrants was ultimately taken to a motel in Houston on November 1, 2022. However, they managed to escape the following day, leading to a swift response from law enforcement. In connection with the case, four other individuals from New Orleans were arrested at the motel: Jonathan Melendez-Merino (32), Oscar Melendez-Sosa (22), Cristian Mencias-Padilla (21), and Cesar Monge-Milla (25).
During the trial, Almendares-Martinez’s defense team contended that another party had utilized his WhatsApp account to coordinate the smuggling efforts, a claim that was ultimately rejected by the jury. U.S. District Judge Kenneth Hoyt presided over the case and has scheduled sentencing for August 11, 2023. Almendares-Martinez faces a substantial penalty, potentially up to 10 years in federal prison, along with a fine that could reach $250,000.
Following the guilty verdict, Almendares-Martinez was taken into custody after previously being released on bond. In related developments, seven other individuals from New Orleans have already pleaded guilty in relation to the same human smuggling case, suggesting a broader network involved in the illegal transportation of undocumented immigrants.
The investigation was carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement – Homeland Security Investigations, with assistance from the Houston Police Department. The government’s focus on human trafficking and smuggling has intensified, reflecting the serious nature of these crimes and their impact on both individuals and communities.
This case serves as a significant reminder of the risks associated with human smuggling, not just for those being transported but also for individuals involved in the illegal operation, who often face severe legal repercussions if caught.
